    About Patanjali
It is believed that Maharishi Patanjali was the avatar of Adi Shesha - the Infinite Cosmic Serpent upon whom Lord Vishnu rests. He is considered to be the compiler of the Yoga Sutras, along with being the author of a commentary on Panini's Ashtadhyayi, known as Mahabhasya. He is also supposed to be the writer of a work on the ancient Indian medicine system, Ayurveda. Read on this biography further to know more about Maharishi Patanjali and his philosophy.
    His Life
The life history of Patanjali is full of legends and contradictions. There are no authentic records regarding his birth. As per one legend, he fell (pata) into the hands (anjali) of a woman, thus giving him the name Patanjali.
    Patanjali Yoga Sutras
It is said that once, while watching a dance by Lord Shiva, Adi Shesha found it unbearable to support the weight of Lord Vishnu. Amazed at this, he asked Lord Vishnu the reason for the same. Lord Vishnu said that this was because of his harmony with Lord Shiva's energy state, owing to the practice of Yoga. Realizing the value and benefits of Yoga, Adi Shesha decided to be born amongst humans as 'Patanjali', to teach them the great art.

    Body Text
It is due to Time that there is sequence of things in this universe. Some things appear at a particular time while other things do not appear at that time. If Time does not prevent some things from appearing at a particular time, if all things were born at the same time, there would be confusion and the whole edifice of causality would crumble (37). Classical Indian philosophy conceptualizes sequence as inseparable from contingency and causality with the corollary that only the non-contingent ever-present ("nitya") and never-present are sequenceless and uncaused. The most memorable expression in literature of the akanksa of time in consciousness is Walt Whitman's "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry" that shows the poet seeing the Brooklyn ferry from the perspective of the expected future and also simultaneously with a superadded expectation of himself as the past for this future: Others will enter the gates of the ferry and cross from shore to shore

    Patanjali Yoga Sutra - IX
Practice Dispassion Abhyasa Vairagabhyam Tannirodhaha: The mind has the five capabilities of cognition, misapprehension, imagination, deep sleep and memory. The nature of the mind is constant activity in trying to put its faculties to use. It always keeps trying to understand, interpret and report its feedback on the happenings in the world outside. The key of yoga is to reign in the mind, which will then become obedient to the command of the intellect. The obedience in this case will be more like a friend or a lover, rather than as a servant to an overbearing and fearsome master. By constant practice, the mind can be trained to listen to the intellect rather than acting on its own. An example of the relationship between the intellect and the mind can be understood this way - the relationship between the CEO of a company and his personal secretary. The personal secretary of the mind has got all the five capabilities. But if he begins to use them on his own, it will be like the secretary receiving all office correspondences and issuing orders himself. A secretary is just supposed to receive the mails and the information and pass it on to the CEO who will take decisions and issue directions. The CEO may chose to ask the secretary for advice now and then, but the final decision is left to himself. Patanjali says that by constant practice of Yoga - the different methods of practice are mentioned in the other Sutras, the energies of the restless, clueless mind can be harnessed and channelised to thoughts and activities that enrich and enhance the individual.

Patanjali - 8 Limbs via the Yoga Journal Conference
December 30, 2007 1:59 pm hershel Raja Yoga Science of Yoga At the Yoga Journal Conference , I attended The 8 Limbs of Yoga, the Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali, as an all day intensive.  (This is a super late, post, but here it is never the less.) It was a phenomenal session, put on by some of the worlds finest yoga instructors: I really enjoyed the session because the early portion of the day did well to stimulate my mental body with the concepts that are communicated in the Yoga Sutras, while the later part of the day facilitate an actual experience on what the Sutras communicate. This was beneficial for me because I had already put some thoughts down regarding my previous thinking along the lines of the Yoga Sutras . Since the session several of my definitions have been updated based on the information that Gary bestowed upon the class. 8 Limbs: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali lecture notes Gary lectured on the Yamas all the way through Pranayama. Then lead the class scientifically through a yoga set to demonstrate some of the concepts taught. I really connected with how Gary presented the yoga set, because he focused on the Science of Yoga. The set was specifically applied due to the 2 hours worth of lecture and a few other factors in order to take us through asana and pranayama.

March 12, 2007 7:35 pm hershel Raja Yoga Science of Yoga In order to further my personal, and soul understanding of the Yoga Sutras I read: The Light of the Soul The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, by Alice Bailey I found this text established proper foundation, and provided sound understandings of the Yoga Sutras. I supplemented this analysis with a perspective from: The Tree of Yoga by B.K.S Iyengar For those of you with strong mental attributes, I would suggest the light of the soul. For those who would like a very simple practical approach to the Yoga Sutras, I would suggest The Tree of Yoga. For those who enjoy multiple perspectives I recommend both.
By following the 8 means of Yoga one is able to achieve Samadhi, or Union. Patanjali presents them to us in a somewhat linear fashion, however, as with many Spiritual journeys one may find that within one step lies the secrets of achieving the others. The 8 Limbs of Yoga

Although the book and its related offerings are meant to help the reader follow the path of realization to its end, one must acknowledge that it is as difficult to do so alone from a book today as it was then. It is hoped that this work will clarify both the possibilities and the limitations of the , indeed, of all words, to bring about wisdom and the end of suffering. It will only have succeeded in this to the extent that it inspires the reader to action, and to stillness.
