Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Coventry Kersey Dighton Patmore (1823-1896), English poet and critic, born in Woodford, Essex. Privately educated, Patmore published his first collection of verse, Poems , in 1844. This volume brought him into the circle that was to create the Pre-Raphaelite movement, a group that resisted the styles of the Victorian era. In 1846 he became an assistant librarian at the British Museum, a post he held for 19 years. Patmore continued writing poems, publishing The Betrothal (1854), which formed the first part of

Encyclopedia Article Find in this article View printer-friendly page E-mail Patmore, Coventry Kersey Dighton (1823-1896), English poet. Patmore was born in Woodford, Essex, and educated privately in England and, briefly, France. His first published poems in 1844 attracted little attention. In 1846 he began work as an assistant librarian at the British Museum, became friendly with Tennyson and Ruskin , and, in 1849, made the acquaintance of the Pre-Raphaelites , to whose journal, The Germ, he contributed an essay on Shakespeare's Macbeth. The Angel in the House, which collected together a sequence of four poems (1854-1863) extolling married love, was his most popular work. Two years after his wife's death in 1862 he became a Catholic, and later poems ( The Unknown Eros
