Patmore was born in Woodford, Essex, and educated privately in England and, briefly, France. His first published poems in 1844 attracted little attention. In 1846 he began work as an assistant librarian at the British Museum, became friendly with Tennyson and Ruskin , and, in 1849, made the acquaintance of the Pre-Raphaelites , to whose journal, The Germ, he contributed an essay on Shakespeare's Macbeth. The Angel in the House, which collected together a sequence of four poems (1854-1863) extolling married love, was his most popular work.
