    Potter, Beatrix
It is always tempting to try to peer into a writer's mind and pry apart the myriad of elements that make the mind produce the final product. In the case of Beatrix Potter, the elements of inspiration can be derived from reading biographical facts. Born into a wealthy Victorian family in London in 1866, young Beatrix spent much of her time observing the little animals that lived nearby or roamed the countryside of the Lake District where she spent her summers. Her parents didn't spend much time with her and her brother, Bertram, went to boarding school, leaving Beatrix to herself under the care of governesses. Sketching and writing in her journal took up a great deal of her time, as did her study of animals and plants. It is easy to speculate that her imagination prospered in such a lonely environment, and that the animals endeared themselves to her during her frequent interactions with them.
Beatrix also showed particular interest in the study of fungi, and probably would have pursued this specialty had she not been born a woman. Her attempts to access to the academic world of botanists were rebuked due to her gender, so she redirected her energies to animals and to writing. She wrote stories and then presented them to children as gifts. Eventually, under the guidance of friend and writer Hardwicke Rawnsley, Beatrix considered sending them in for publication. Her first story

BEATRIX POTTER (1866-1943) The Happy Pair The Tale of Peter Rabbit After a fierce battle with her parents, in 1905, Potter became engaged to Norman Warne, her editor, though two years later he died. Soon after, she bought Hill Top Farm at Sawrey, near Windermere, gaining a measure of independence and becoming a capable farmer. During the following eight years she produced much of her best work, and both her home and the adjacent Castle Farm, which she bought in 1909, were used as the settings for at least six of her books. Originally published in a variety of forms, each volume had its appearance tailored to a particular text, and the integration of word and image was carefully considered. Though Potter made use of a basic anthopomorphism, she tended to eschew further fantasy, and the great success of her illustration often lies in the sense it gives of particular place.
Following her marriage to William Heelis, an Appleby solicitor, in 1913, Potter worked little and spent much of her time farming. She died at Hill Top Farm on 22 December 1943. Her properties were bequeathed to the National Trust.

During most of her adult life, she lived in a farm cottage in Sawrey, Westmoreland County, where she kept many animals as pets. Unsuccessful in attempts to publish her serious botanical work (watercolor studies of fungi), she wrote (1893) and published privately (1900) for an invalid child The Tale of Peter Rabbit. This story about the first of many animal characters she was to create became a children's classic throughout the world. Other diminutive animal characters created by her include Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddle-Duck, and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Inseparable from her whimsical tales are her delicate but exact and detailed watercolor illustrations depicting her characters in domestic scenes. Potter's other works include The Tailor of Gloucester (1902) and The Tale of Tom Kitten (1907). Interested in the preservation of the natural landscape, she bequeathed her property in Sawrey to the National Trust, which also maintains her home as a museum.
