Quintus Smyrnaeus Quintus Smyrnaeus (fl. 4th century ad ), Greek epic poet, probably a native of Asia Minor. Quintus was the author of the poem Posthomerica, which, in 14 books (8,770 lines), recounted the story of the Trojan War, beginning with the funeral of Hector. Quintus’ statement that as a boy he herded sheep near Smyrna is probably not to be taken literally; nothing is known of his life. Posthomerica, which is probably a versified paraphrase of a prose summary of the lost cyclic epics (post-Homeric poems dealing with Homeric subject matter), such as those written by Apollodorus (fl. 1st century bc) and Proclus (fl. 2nd century ad ), lacks unity of plot and consistent characterization. It is free from rhetorical extravagance but is slow moving, trite, and flat. Such merit as it possesses is in occasional episodes (for example, the madness of Ajax in Book 5, the suicide of Oenone in Book 10), and in the frequent and sometimes striking similes. The language is an intentional imitation of Homer combined with the metre of the Alexandrian poets. There are many echoes of earlier Greek literature and probably signs of familiarity with Virgil and Ovid. Imitated by Tryphiodorus (fl. 5th or 6th century ad ) and quoted by late commentators on Homer, Quintus was little read in the Middle Ages. Most, if not all, surviving manuscripts descend from a manuscript discovered by Greek scholar Cardinal Bessarion shortly after 1452 in a monastery in Casole near Otranto, Italy. For this reason Quintus Smyrnaeus is sometimes called Quintus Calaber, or 'the Calabrian'. The Greek text, with a translation by A. S. Way, was published in the Loeb Classical Library (1913).
