Peter Mark Roget (1779 - 1869)
Roget was an English doctor, writer and inventor, but today is known for his "Thesaurus". Peter Mark Roget was born on 18 January 1779 in London, the son of a Swiss clergyman. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University and graduated in 1798. As a young doctor he published works on tuberculosis and on the effects of nitrous oxide, known as 'laughing gas', then used as an anaesthetic. Roget worked in Bristol and in Manchester and for a time was a private tutor, travelling with his charges to Europe. In 1808, he moved to London and continued to lecture on medical topics. He was made a fellow of the Royal Society and from 1827 to 1848 served as its secretary. In 1814 he invented a slide rule to calculate the roots and powers of numbers. This formed the basis of slide rules that were common currency in schools and universities until the age of the calculator. He was also interested in optics and a paper on how the kaleidoscope could be improved. Later in his life, he attempted to construct a calculating machine. He also wrote on a wide range of topics, contributing to encyclopaedias of the day.

Roget, Peter Mark Roget, Peter Mark (1779-1869), English scholar and doctor, who compiled the famous Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases. He was born in London, and educated at the University of Edinburgh. He worked as a physician, then chief surgeon at Manchester Infirmary and had several medical papers published during his time there, whilst also giving scientific lectures. He then went on to develop his career in medicine and founded the North London Dispensary, where he worked voluntarily for 18 years. His Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases (1852) was the product of his retirement from medical practice, although it was based on a system of verbal classification that he had begun as early as 1805. It went through 28 editions in his lifetime, and is still a standard reference work. "Roget, Peter Mark," Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2007

Summary:
from the introductory:
Being a computer-readable version of the Roget's Thesaurus published in 1911. This eBook is an electronic version of the edition of Roget's Thesaurus published in 1911 by the Crowell company. Note that this version of Thesaurus-1911 has been supplemented with over 1,000 words not present in the original 1911 edition, but many modern words are still missing. About 1500 verbs (out of 6500) which can be found in an 80,000-word spell-checker are absent from this work. The deficiency of nouns is probably much worse, especially on technical topics. Of 40,000 unique words contained in the original text, 12,000 are not recognized by a spell-checker. Most of these are foreign words (primarily Latin), and many are obsolete. In this version, these words are marked as such by comments in square brackets. The original arrangement has also been modified slightly in several places, in particular by splitting one entry into two. A version of the 1911 thesaurus which is almost identical to the original (only a small number of additions have been made to the original work.)

I once read somewhere that English has only one pair of true synonyms: furze and gorse. This is one of those items that has rattled around in my head for years long after I have forgotten the source of it. So this week I decided to try to verify at least portion of it. I looked up "furze" in the Random House Dictionary of the English Language (Second Edition), which is still my favorite dictionary after the OED. Sure enough, the first definition was simply "gorse." And when I looked up "gorse," it gave a fairly complete definition, with a little picture and said, "also furze."

I went shopping this morning, with Mum and Saz. Well, we went to see some of mums jewellery in a gallery shop, and then paid a visit to HMV. It proved to be substantially worthwhile, as I purchased...

Funeral For a Friend - 'Casually Dressed and Deep In Conversation'
The Mars Volta - 'De-Loused in the Comatorium' Scary artwork, but I can live with that since the music rocks.
Placebo - 'Live in Paris DVD' Oh, the infinite joys of Placebo!
Thus, I am happy.
I also got 'A Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy' from lovely Ottakers. I like Ottakers - best bookshop ever, mainly due to the calming soundtrack of Norah Jones on continual loop, and the wafts of coffee from the coffee shop. Plus the helpful staff and comfy chairs, all makes for one happy book shopping experience!
Now I'm going to take the dog for a walk.
