Franklin D Roosevelt (1882 - 1945)
Roosevelt was the only American president elected to office four times and led his country through two of the greatest crises of the 20th century - the Great Depression and World War Two. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on 30 January 1882 at his family's estate in New York State. His father was a businessman. He attended Harvard and Columbia University Law School, but had little enthusiasm to be a lawyer. In 1905 he married Eleanor Roosevelt, a distant cousin and niece of President Theodore Roosevelt. Five years later Roosevelt was elected to the New York Senate, where he quickly came to national attention as a rising Democratic politician. From 1913 to 1920 - which included the years of World War One - Roosevelt was assistant secretary of the Navy, where he achieved a reputation as a capable young administrator. In 1921 Roosevelt suddenly fell ill with polio and was left unable to walk without braces or a cane. It seemed to signal the end of his career, but through his determination and the support of his wife, who often acted as his substitute at political meetings, he returned to work. In 1928, Roosevelt was elected governor of New York and in 1932 became the Democratic nominee for president, winning by a landslide. He came to power when the Great Depression was at its worst. He ushered in the 'New Deal' programme (1933 - 1938) to provide relief for the unemployed, and then jobs, as well as attempting to reform and strengthen the American economy.

Introduction Roosevelt, Franklin Delano (1882-1945), 32nd President of the United States (1933-1945); elected for an unprecedented four terms, he was one of the 20th century's most skilful political leaders. His New Deal programme, a response to the Great Depression, utilized the US federal government as an instrument of social and economic change in contrast to its traditionally passive role. Then, in World War II, he led the Allies in their defeat of the Axis powers. II. Early Life Born at Hyde Park, New York, on January 30, 1882, he was the only child of James Roosevelt and Sara Delano Roosevelt. His father, a semi-retired railway executive, was a cousin of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States. Although they were not wealthy by late 19th-century standards, the Roosevelts of Hyde Park led a comfortable, gracious existence, and young Franklin's life was sheltered; he was educated by governesses and indulged by his father. A handsome youth, he was an excellent athlete, expert at boating and swimming, and he also collected stamps, birds, and model ships—hobbies that he pursued all his life. His formal education began at the Groton School in Massachusetts, where the headmaster, Endicott Peabody, stressed to his affluent young students their obligation towards those who were less fortunate in society. After graduation from Harvard University in 1904, Roosevelt attended Columbia University Law School without taking a degree and was admitted to the New York State bar in 1907. In 1905, despite his widowed mother's objections, he married a distant cousin, Eleanor Roosevelt, in a gala society wedding at which President Theodore Roosevelt gave the bride away.

"One is left, therefore, with the inescapable conclusion that the promises to 'keep America out of foreign wars' were a deliberate hoax on the American people, perpetrated for the purpose of insuring Roosevelt's re-election and thereby enabling him to proceed with his plan of gradually edging the United States into war." BigSoccer Not Soccer Related PDA View Full Version : Ranking the Presidents Pages : Revolt 12 Sep 2005, 04:31 PM Should be an interesting discussion. Personally, I would rate Dubya as our worst-ever president, but hey, that's just me.
I wonder how the ratings would look if there done, say, today?
http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110007243
http://www.opinionjournal.com/pl/?id=110007244
Mr. Bush's rating thus reflects the same sharp partisan divide that gave him a shade under 51% of the popular vote last year. GOP-leaning scholars rated Mr. Bush the 6th-best president of all time, while Democratic ones rated him No. 35, or 6th-worst. Even Bill Clinton13th among Democrats, 34th among Republicansisn't as controversial.
http://www.opinionjournal.com/images/storyend_dingbat.gif
If this result reflects the passions of the moment, how will history judge George W. Bush? Today's opinion polls are no guide: Warren G. Harding was a lot more popular when he died in office than Harry S. Truman was when he left, yet Harding now rates as a failure and Truman as near great.
Here's one way of thinking about the question: The three great presidentsWashington, Lincoln and FDRall faced unprecedented challenges, all responded to them boldly, and all succeeded. Mr. Bush has met the first two of these criteria: The 9/11 attacks were his unprecedented challenge; setting out to democratize the Middle East was his bold response. Will he succeednot just in bringing stability and representative government to Iraq but in beginning a process that spreads freedom throughout the region? That will determine whether he joins the top tiers of presidents.
