Dr Walter Scott The enigmatic Dr Walter Scott, rarely interviewed or photographed, enters the sumptuous boardroom of his eponymous firm of fund managers and explains why elegance informed by history, personal passion and the genius of Robert Adam demanded he just had to buy Nos 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 15, 16, 17, 44 and 45 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh. It is a labour of love, and an expensive one.
Scott - a top-class rower, fine pilot and nuclear physicist manque - began his quest quietly enough, in 1996 when he bought number 9, with the last of his two purchases, announced just before Christmas, garnering breathless media copy about the mysterious Howard Hughes figure intent on buying up the best addresses in Scotland. He is, though, flesh and blood - "private rather than reclusive" as he puts it in what is his first interview in decades - and even rather a good egg.

    250TH ANNIVERSARY
    God Protect Brave Alexander
    Sir Walter Scott
Strong feelings lie beneath the surface of Sir Walter Scott's official poem in praise of Czar Alexander I. Absorbed as he was in the renovation of his beloved house Abbotsford near Edinburgh, Scott was still swept up in the tumultuous politics of the age. Only four years had passed since Napoleon's retreat from the blood-soaked plains of Russia. "God Protect Brave Alexander" was sung to an air by Haydn at a formal dinner in Edinburgh. Among the party was the Czar's younger brother, the Grand Duke Nicholas. Scott had met the Emperor the year before at a ball in Paris celebrating the Duke of Wellington's victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Scott's poem is among letters dealing with the poet's renovation of Abbotsford.

CHARLES DICKENS, Pickwick. Papers, chap. xxxiii Sir Walter Scott, famous Scottish poet and novelist, was born in Edinburgh August 15, 1771. He attended the Edinburgh High School and College, and studied for the bar, to which he was called in 1792. He first appeared in print with a volume of verse in 1796. "The Lady of the Lake" appeared in 1810. His first novel, "Waverley," was issued anonymously in 1814, and the other stories of the series followed in succeeding years. In 1826 the failure of the house of Constable ruined him financially, and he spent the remainder of his life writing, trying to pay off the debt. He was married to Charlotte Mary Carpenter in 1797, and had four children. He died at Abbotsford September 21,1832. REFERENCE: J. G. Lockhart
