MSN Encarta - Robert Browning
He is most famous for the development of the dramatic monologue , for his psychological insight, and for his forceful, colloquial poetic style. It was followed by a dramatic poem, “Paracelsus” (1835), that brought him into prominence among the literary figures of the day. There he wrote Christmas Eve and Easter-Day (1850) and a series of dramatic monologues , published collectively as Men and Women (1855), which included “Fra Lippo Lippi” and “Andrea del Sarto,” studies of Renaissance artists. http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761577090/Browning_Robert.html (415 words)

2412 A New Critical Reading of William Shakespeare's The Tempest.
In this work, The Tempest is subject to a New Critical analysis that yields interesting results with respect to its religious symbolism and political paradoxes. This paper will argue that the form of The Tempest is rather one of unresolved stresses and (quite literally) disharmony. 5 pgs. 15 f/c. 1b.

2645 Power and Order in Shakespeare's The Tempest and Romeo and Juliet.
This paper discusses how power creates a social structure that destroys the moral fiber of citizens in "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Tempest". Although the ending of "The Tempest" is more idealistic than in "Romeo and Juliet", we see the negative influence of power. In many respects, the issue of power in Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" is precisely about the relationship between romantic love and parental power. In "The Tempest", meanwhile, it is clear that Antonio had too much power and abused the affairs of state. 5 pgs. 5 f/c. 5b.

4101 Troilus and Cressida: A Critique of Human Motivation.

This paper examines the play, "Troilus and Cressida," as a critique on the mythology of the Trojan War, and as a larger comment on the problems of human desire and self-centered actions. There are three kinds of reasoning offered by three different characters, all of which make claims to a method for judgement, a method for values, and as a rationale for acting. Shakespeare's then portrays each character in contradiction, acting in self-serving ways, thus prolonging the war, trapped in a cycle of unresolvable issues that are based on the conflicts of human motivation. 6 pgs. Bibliography lists 1 source.

6105 No Profit in Love in Two Shakespeare Plays: "Troilus and Cressida" and "The Tempest".
This undergraduate level paper examines the idea that two of Shakespeare's plays, "The Tempest", and "Troilus and Cressida", demonstrate that in his satires, Shakespeare was attacking the idea that in love there is profit. 4 pgs. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Introduction
Print this section William Shakespeare (1564-1616), English playwright and poet, recognized in much of the world as the greatest of all dramatists . Hundreds of editions of his plays have been published, including translations in all major languages. Scholars have written thousands of books and articles about his plots, characters, themes, and language. He is the most widely quoted author in history, and his plays have probably been performed more times than those of any other dramatist. There is no simple explanation for Shakespeare’s unrivaled popularity, but he remains our greatest entertainer and perhaps our most profound thinker. He had a remarkable knowledge of human behavior, which he was able to communicate through his portrayal of a wide variety of characters. He was able to enter fully into the point of view of each of his characters and to create vivid dramatic situations in which to explore human motivations and behavior. His mastery of poetic language and of the techniques of drama enabled him to combine these multiple viewpoints, human motives, and actions to produce a uniquely compelling theatrical experience.
