Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft
Upon returning from her second stay in Scotland, Mary befriended Percy Shelley who was an acquaintance of her father's and an admirer of his socialist views. Within the year, at the age of sixteen Mary and Percy became lovers, even though Percy was already married. Mary's father forbad their relationship and in July 1814, Mary, Percy, and Mary's stepsister, Claire, left for France. They traveled through France, Switzerland, and Germany with little money and eventually had to return to England. In 1816, Mary gave birth to her first son and again Mary, Percy, and Claire traveled to the continent. They traveled to Switzerland where Lord Byron was living; both Mary and Percy were admirers of his work, and while living in London Claire had been his lover. It was in Switzerland, at Villa Diodati, that Mary Shelley first envisioned the outlines for Frankenstein . The group that had been staying at the villa was reading a book of German ghost stories, and they had decided that each member of the group should invent their own story. At first, Mary could not think of a story, but Byron, Percy, and Mary had had a conversation about the nature of life and whether it would ever be possible to reanimate a corpse. Thus

Daughter of the British philosopher William Godwin and the British author and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin , she was born in London, and privately educated. She met the young poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in May 1814, and two months later left England with him. When Shelley's first wife died in December 1816, he married Mary. In 1818 her first and most important work, the novel Frankenstein, was published. A remarkable accomplishment for a 20-year-old, the work was an immediate critical and popular success. Repeatedly dramatized for both the theater and motion pictures, this tale of Frankenstein, a student of the occult, and the subhuman monster he assembles from parts of human corpses added a new word to the English language: A “Frankenstein” is any creation that ultimately destroys its creator. No other work by Mary Shelley achieved the popularity or excellence of this first work, although she wrote four other novels, books of travel sketches, and miscellaneous tales and verse. One of her novels

    Klappentext
Frankenstein is a masterpiece of nineteenth-century Gothicism and the prototype of the twentieth-century science-fiction novel. It was conceived in the Swiss Alps in mid-June 1816 after a conversation about bringing corpses to life provoked a nightmare, and was written over the next eleven months in largely morbid circumstances. Death and the terrors of childbirthas much as Romanticism, a burgeoning awareness of unconscious drives, and contemporary ideas of atheism, the collapse of the social contract, and the corrupting influence of society on human natureinform this story of a man (or monster) built by Dr. Victor Frankenstein and brought to life by electricity. The monster's culpability for various horrific acts, his powerlessness in the face of his complete ostracism from society, and Dr. Frankenstein's lies, abdication of responsibility, and the pain he inflicts on his creation raised chilling questions that made the novel an immediate bestseller.

Mary was born in London. Her mother died ten days after her birth. Her father had many literary friends, and Mary's childhood was populated by such figures as William Hazlitt Charles Lamb , and Samuel Taylor Coleridge . In 1812, Percy Bysshe Shelley and his wife Harriet joined their circle. Before Mary was 17, she and Shelley were meeting secretly by her mother's grave in St Pancras churchyard. After Shelley's separation from Harriet in 1814, he and Mary eloped to the Continent. In the eight years before the poet's death, the couple lived an unconventional life, moving between Italy, England, and Switzerland, part of a bohemian set that included the poets John Keats and Lord Byron . Harriet Shelley's suicide in December 1816 allowed Mary and Percy to marry. They had four children together, but only one, Percy Florence, survived his parents. The loss of their first child affected Mary profoundly, and seems to have shaped the themes of her first novel
