As a young engineer and surveyor he began geological investigations of rock strata in Great Britain. In 1815 he completed the Geological Map of England and Wales, with part of Scotland. Between 1819 and 1822 he published 21 coloured maps known collectively as a Geological Atlas of England and Wales —the first attempt to represent the distribution and location of the rock formations of an entire country. Smith was also the first individual to characterize rock strata by their respective fossil inclusions.

Killed By Electricity
William Smith Loses His Life On a Telegraph Pole
His Foot Came in Contact With an Electric Light Wire and He Was Killed Instantly-The Inquest Held To-Day William Smith of Atlantic Highlands, a young man employed by the Postal telegraph company, was killed at Red Bank last Saturday morning by coming in contact with a charged electric light wire. Smith was at the top of a telegraph pole when he was killed. He did not fall, but was taken down from the pole by some of his fellow workmen. The accident happened just after the men had begun work in the morning. The Postal telegraph company is putting up some trunk wires and their men had been engaged for some time in erecting new poles, which are considerably larger and taller than the old ones. In some cases the poles were set up between the wires of the electric light company, two of the electric light wires being on one side of the telegraph pole and two others on the other side of the pole. Coroner Tetley was notified and he viewed the body. He gave permission to have the body removed to R. R. Mount's undertaking establishment. It was there viewed by a coroner's jury which had been empaneled, and at noon the body was taken to Atlantic Highlands by Amzi M. Posten, who is an undertaker at that place.

Wed Mar 24 20:06:19 CET 2004 Hi, I'm teaching myself Python for fun. I've picked a little project that is interesting to me. I've made some progress over the last couple nights, mostly reading Guido's tutorial, but I think it would go a lot more quickly if I had some advice from experienced Python programmers. I think what I really need is a suggestion on the best data structure(s) to use. Here's what I am doing. I have three files with csv records (lines). We can have column headers at the top of each file if that helps. The first field in each record is a name; otherwise the files mostly contain different data. I'd like to create unique id numbers (in a new column) so that names which appear in more than one file have the same id number in each file. And of course every line in every file should end up with an id number. The catch is that while most names will appear in every file, some will
