'The Bonnet Toun'
The Bonnet Guild When did it all begin and why is it called the Bonnet Guild?
The First Festival was held in 1933 and the organising committee named itself the Bonnet Guild in reverence to the town's main industry in past times the making of woollen bonnets and after the old Bonnet Court of Corsehill in the 17th century. In the winter of 1932/33, Bailie Tom Barclay had an idea to run a gala day for children the following summer. He called in Bailie John Atchison and Councillor Hugh Muir to assist him and in March, 1933, a committee of twenty-seven prominent, local men was formed consisting of businessmen connected with the knitwear industry, bankers, school teachers, and ex-professional football players. This information has been copied from another site.
We will update further details about the History of the Guild, and include details for the June 2008 Festival, as they become available to us. The event was a great success thanks to a lot of people especially Donald Mclean from the Fruit and Veg shop. Katie Roland for all her Committee Minutes and Promoting the event and Mandy Campbell from Candy Chace.

Lainshaw Street Stewarton lies at a crossing point of the Annick Water six miles north of Kilmarnock and within commuting distance of Glasgow and Irvine. This part of North Ayrshire is attractively rural in nature and Stewarton has served as a waypoint servicing through routes, as well as a town of some significance.

John Knox Church of Scotland Stewarton is known as the Bonnet Toun and as early as the 1400s it was engaged in the production of this traditional Scottish headwear. The association with bonnet making was resurrected in 1932 when the long defunct Stewarton Bonnet Guild, first established in 1590, was re-established. Its main role these days is to organise the Festival Week that takes place in June each year.

This article is mainly about wartime in the small Ayrshire town of Stewarton in the west of Scotland. It also includes some generalisations about the war years in Britain. During the late thirties due to the rise to power of Hitler and the Nazi party in Germany, we in this country lived constantly under the threat of war, with crisis following crisis. This really became significant early in 1939 when civilians were issued with gas masks. Then in mid-July of that year, young men of twenty years of age were conscripted into the forces for six months military training. For the majority of the "militiamen", as they were called, the six months stretched out to over six long years before they returned to "civvy street". Alas some were never to return at all. It is history now that Germany invaded Poland late in August 1939 and when there was no reply to the British ultimatum by eleven o'clock on the morning of 3rd September, Mr Chamberlain, the Prime Minister, announced in that fateful broadcast "that consequently this country is at war with Germany".

Ian Stewart on Minesweeper
It's not often you can win a million dollars by analysing a computer game, but by a curious conjunction of fate, there's a chance that you might. However, you'll only pick up the loot if all the experts are wrong and a problem that they think is extraordinarily hard turns out to be easy. So don't order the Corvette yet. The prize is one of seven now on offer from the newly founded Clay Mathematics Institute in Cambridge MA, set up by businessman Landon T. Clay to promote the growth and spread of mathematical knowledge, each bearing a million-buck price-tag. The computer game is Minesweeper, which is included in Microsoft's Windows operating system, and involves locating hidden mines on a grid by making guesses about where they are located and using clues provided by the computer. And the problem is one of the most notorious open questions in mathematics, which rejoices in the name 'P=NP?'. The connection between the game and the prize problem was explained by Richard Kaye of the University of Birmingham, England ('Minesweeper is NP-complete', Mathematical Intelligencer volume 22 number 4, 2000, pages 9-15). And before anyone gets too excited, you won't win the prize by winning the game. To win the prize, you will have to find a really slick method to answer questions about Minesweeper when it's played on gigantic grids and all the evidence suggests that there isn't a slick method. In fact, if you can prove that there isn't one, you can win the prize that way too.

Jon Stewart to Hillary Clinton Monday night on the eve of primary elections that are likely to decide who the nominee of the Democratic Party will be: "This election is about judgment, and yet tomorrow is perhaps one of the most important days of your life and you've chosen to spend the night before talking to me. Senator, as a host I'm delighted. As a citizen, I'm frightened." Clinton: "It is pretty pathetic."
