Stars in Rewind: Jon Stewart ... on Weed! Posted Feb 22nd 2008 8:02PM by Monika Bartyzel
Filed under: Oscar Watch Trailers and Clips Stars in Rewind
Once again, the lovely Jon Stewart is hosting the Oscars a gig that may be worthy of your time not for the awards, but rather to see what they made of the whole thing last minute. Will the rush help the Oscars improve? Will they completely suck? Who knows?!
But it would all be better with weed, according to Jon. As I see it, we need to balance out all of Stewart's political comedy and fancy shmancy hosting with some old-school stoner comedy. In Half Baked , he played the "Enhancement Smoker" the dude who thinks Mary Jane actually makes everything better. Stars are better. Scent of a Woman is better. The back of a $20 is better (or was ... I wondered what he'd see in it now). So, it goes to assume that the Oscars would be better ... on weed.
Maybe that's the secret to a good Academy show?

The Dealer Fee, Bestiality, and Tallahassee Politics
The Dealer Fee, Bestiality, and Tallahassee Politics
Dealer Fee and Bestiality Similarities

I wrote my first column about my frustration with Florida politics for the February 1st Hometown News. I expressed my frustration with not being able converse with Senator Jeff Atwater about why the dealer fee should be made illegal. If you missed that column, Politics, the Dealer Fee and You, you can read it now by clicking on www.EarlStewartOnCars.com
That issue of the Hometown News was delivered on Friday, February 1, and Senator Jeff Atwater called the following morning on my cell phone! We met in person shortly afterwards for almost two hours in my office. He also appeared on my Saturday morning one-hour talk show [Seaview AM 960 9-10 AM] one week after that. You can listen to the dialog between the Senator and me by clicking on www.SeaviewAM960.com
After appearing on my radio show, Senator Atwater advised me that I should meet with Senator Alex Diaz de la Portilla, the chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee. This committee was reviewing the Senate Investigative Report on the Dealer Fee that was commissioned by Senator Ken Pruitt. I met with Senator Diaz de la Portilla at a Sheraton Hotel in Dania and flew to Tallahassee the following Tuesday and testified before his committee. I was given plenty of time to tell Chairman Diaz de la Portilla and the other members of his committee why the Dealer Fee should be made illegal in Florida. I answered all their questions and passed out copies of my talk as well as examples of illegal and unethical auto ads in the Palm Beach Post. You can read my remarks by clicking on

GOP electoral scheme dies in California

Download Play Download Play ... debonair moderate, pro-choice , pro-gun control, anti-Reagan Republican Governor from the bluest state in the union to a pandering, principle-less xenophobe that would say anything and do anything to become President. A classically tragic figure. But all the good will and pity I had for Mittens quickly evaporated today after his shameful, divisive and fear-mongering speech at CPAC The Terrorists dropped $35 million of his own cash in the process.

Stewart Copeland
I've collected from various publications information
about Stewart's playing, his equipment, and the
Police's recording techniques; mostly for my own
research purposes, but interesting nonetheless.
Stewart on recording techniques:
October 1980, Musician's Only

The new album has a remarkably 'clean' and sparse sound, with a beautifully nurtured drum and guitar presence, I observed. "Yeah, it doesn't have any of the heavy metal that I suppose was on the first two albums. But there are plenty of groups providing that already. There's not fuzzy guitar anywhere this time. The World Is Running Down for example started out as a heavy jazz number and then we Policeified it. We always do lots of overdubbing and employ the studio techniques to the fullest and there's a lot of cosmetic surgery on the tapes. We fill up the 24 tracks and more because we bounce down and by the end you could count up to forty or fifty tracks. But we don't use them all. By the mixing stage that’s when we lose a few."
It seemed that the drum sound was particularly prominent and Stewart had no shame about this. "Well that’s my usual contribution. You could set up a recording of me in the studio shouting ‘More snare drum’. No I don't think the vocals are too far back. You can hear them okay. They are an important ingredient, I suppose. But a lot of bands forget that the drums are supposed to be loud. It’s not just that the drummer gets some attention - the beat is really important. It doesn't have to be loud so much as there. Think of Fleetwood Mac and the Beatles. The drums were always positive and loud on their records."

Fire Chief Bill Stewart On Fire Prevention
Sunday March 2, 2008 CityNews.ca Staff Fire Chief Bill Stewart has long called for residential sprinklers. After Saturday's blaze that killed five in Hamilton, he renewed his plea. He also told home-owners (and renters) what they can do to prepare themselves for a possible fire. Here's the full text: I'll use a three-step platform. One, make sure you have a working smoke alarm. Two, make sure that smoke alarm is 10 years old or less. Three, change the batteries in that smoke alarm. The issue for us is that you can have a working smoke alarm in a residence and it may in fact not give you time to get out of the residence. Therefore, we're urging obviously the province of Ontario to consider residential sprinklers. Something as simple as that would save more lives in Ontario and in the city of Toronto. So, the province of Ontario is looking at bring in legislation for three storeys and above. However, there's no indication of where they start, whether they are on the first floor, second floor or the 30th floor. So it's human behaviour, it's what you and I put in our homes.

33. Division Of Labour: Alan Greenspan And Jon Stewart On Free Markets Versus Centra
Alan Greenspan and Jon Stewart on free markets versus central banking. From tonight’s Daily Show (my transcription from the Tivo’d interview)
http://divisionoflabour.com/archives/004047.php
Main September 19, 2007 Alan Greenspan and Jon Stewart on free markets versus central banking From tonight’s Daily Show (my transcription from the Tivo’d interview): Jon Stewart: Many people are free-market capitalists, and they always talk about free-market capitalism, and that is our economic theory. So why do we have a Fed? Is the free market – wouldn’t the market take care of interest rates and all that? Why do we have someone adjusting the rates if we are a free-market society? Alan Greenspan: You’re raising a very fundamental question. … You didn’t need central bank when we were on the gold standard, which was back in the nineteenth century. And all of the automatic things occurred because people would buy and sell gold, and the market would do what the Fed does now. But: most everybody in the world by the 1930s decided that the gold standard was strangling the economy. And universally this gold standard was abandoned. But: you need somebody to determine –or some mechanism – how much money is out there, because remember, the amount of money relates to the amount of inflation in the economy. … In any event the more money you have, relative to the amount of goods, the more inflation you have, and that’s not good. So: Stewart: So we’re not a free market then.

Jon Stewart's Crossfire appearance on bittorrent
Posted by Xeni Jardin, October 15, 2004 5:24 PM permalink One of the most powerful televised exchanges in recent history. Stewart hits it out of the park. BoingBoing reader bryan says, "Jon Stewart blasted the hosts on CNN's Crossfire for hurting the democratic process instead of helping. He also calls Tucker Carlson a dick. Bittorrent: Link , and transcript here BoingBoing reader Hal points us to Salon's coverage ( Link ), and describes the interview/buttkicking alternately: "Tucker Carlson gets his ass handed to him on a platter without falafel to sweeten the taste." In Salon, Charles Taylor says: I've heard people talk about "The Daily Show" as an oasis of sanity, a public service. I couldn't agree more. Stewart's appearance on "Crossfire" was another public service. He went on and acted as if the show's purpose really was to confront tough issues, instead of being the political equivalent of pro wrestling. Given a chance to say absolutely what he thought, Stewart took it. He accomplished what almost never happens on television anymore: He made the dots come alive. Here's an alternate BitTorrent link: Link Thanks
