Algernon Charles Swinburne
Algernon Charles Swinburne was born in London, the son of an admiral, and grew up on the Isle of Wight. He was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, leaving without a degree. He first came to public attention with the play Atalanta in Calydon (1865) but it was the publication of the irreverent Poems and Ballads the following year which brought him a mixture of controversy and acclaim. Thereafter he wrote prolifically, publishing a more toned-down Poems and Ballads: Second Series in 1878 and several prose works. He was rescued from alcohol addiction in 1879 by his friend Theodore Watts Dunton, at his home under his control in Putney for the rest of his life. His latter years were highly productive and he produced Tristam of Lyonesse Poems and Ballads: Third Series (1889), and several verse plays. He was also an incisive literary critic, whose subjects included Baudelaire, Blake , Hugo, Webster, Shakespeare Byron Chorus from 'Atalanta'

ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE QUOTES The highest spiritual quality, the noblest property of mind a man can have, is this of loyalty ... a man with no loyalty in him, with no sense of love or reverence or devotion due to something outside and above his poor daily life, with its pains and pleasures, profits and losses, is as evil a case as man can be. ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE, Ode to Mazzini
Love is a barren sea, bitter and deep;
And though she saw all heaven in flower above,
She would not love.
Algernon Charles Swinburne, "A Leave-taking" Wherever there is a grain of loyalty there is a glimpse of freedom. ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE, Ode to Mazzini

Poems and Ballads: First Series (1866) created one of the most famous literary scandals of the Victorian period. Swinburne attempted to celebrate physical love and the life of the senses in the spirit of the ancient Greek lyric poets and certain French contemporaries. Some of the poems with their open display of masochism demonstrate his tendency to shock: Could you hurt me, sweet lips, though I hurt you?

Poems at the Poetry Free-for-all Not Really Poetry Voyage of Discovery PDA View Full Version : decapentasyllavos Arcadian 04-29-2004, 01:15 PM zip 04-30-2004, 03:04 AM Since English meter is counted in terms of feet, not syllables, such terms as "decapentasyllavos" are largely meaningless when applied to English and are in fact appropriate only to langauges where it's syllables and not feet which are counted. In English, a 15-syllable line could be produced in any number of ways:
acephalous iambic octameter
catalyctic trochaic octameter
anapestic pentameter
dactylic pentameter
Such long lines rarely work well in English and are rarely used for that very reason. An example of the first (or second, depending on how you want to look at it), would be Thomas Hardy's "Friends Beyond" (http://www.theotherpages.org/poems/wessex6.html#beyond), where the first and third lines of each stanza fit that pattern.
I don't off the top of my head recall specific examples of the third and fourth types (which rarely actually have 15 syllables per lines because of the large number of iambic/trochaic substitutions generally required for those meters), but I vaguely recollect Hardy has one of the third type somewhere. Hardy, in fact, was the greatest experimenter with various meters and forms in the history of English poetry. Another example of a Hardy poem which uses long lines (though not specifically 15 syllables) in "In Tenebris III" (http://www.theotherpages.org/poems/hardy01.html#13), which, to my ear, like most of Hardy's efforts in longer lines, seems rather clunky.

A Ballad of Death
by Algernon Charles Swinburne
from Poetica Erotica
K NEEL down, fair Love, and fill thyself with tears,
Girdle thyself with sighing for a girth
Upon the sides of mirth,
Cover thy lips and eyelids, let thine ears
Be filled with rumour of people sorrowing;
Make thee soft raiment out of woven sighs
Upon the flesh to cleave,
Set pains therein and many a grievous thing,
And many sorrows after each his wise For amlet and for gorget and for sleeve. O Love's lute heard about the lands of death, Left hanged upon the trees that were therein; O Love and Time and Sin, Three singing mouths that mourn now under breath, Three lovers, each one evil spoken of; O smitten lips where through this voice of mine Came softer with her praise; Abide a little for our lady's love. The kisses of her mouth were more than wine, And more than peace the passage of her days. O Love, thou knowest if she were good to see. O Time, thou shalt not find in any land Till, cast out of thine hand, The sunlight and the moonlight fail from thee

Englischer Schriftsteller und Literaturkritiker, 5. April 1837, London - 10. April 1909, London.
