James Thomson Born: 13 Nov 1786 in Annaghmore, near Ballynahinch, Co. Although originally Scottish, the family were Presbyterians who had been forced to leave Ayrshire in the 1640s during the struggle between the episcopacy of Charles I and the Covenanters. They settled in the Presbyterian north of Ireland. James Thomson senior was a farmer who gave his children what little education they would receive. James, the subject of this biography, was his parents' third son. Thomson showed his mathematical skills and interests at a young age. He constructed sundials and also a night-dial which enabled the time at night to be found using the stars. When still about ten years old he had calculated how to make a sundials for any latitude. However events of the time were to create a strong impression on the young Thomson which greatly affected his outlook on life. The country was poor and there were bitter divisions between Catholics and Protestants. However the Society of United Irishmen was founded in Belfast in 1791 who promoted a nation freed of religious division and corrupt monarchy. They inspired a series of rebellions in 1798 which were brutally repressed by the British. In that year Thomson witnessed the battle of Ballynahinch where the United Irishmen were defeated [

In this role he has global responsibility for visualization technology in the upstream segment of BP. This includes the Highly Immersive Visualization Environment (HIVE) program of collaborative visualization rooms plus other innovative technologies. He actively investigates new visualization tools and is responsible for dissemination of best practices within BP. New Directions in Petroleum Visualization Outside of the dedicated VR, visualization systems are being adopted sized for use by teams, workgroups and individual workers. These include workstations suited for a single user or collaboration sessions of up to five people with optional stereographic display. Touch-enabled interfaces are available, particularly for GIS applications, allowing users to interact with layered data sets in a natural way. New monitors with stylus touch controls are being used as a mouse substitute for geophysical interpretation systems. Holographic displays are also appearing.
