In 1869 he disproved the theory of spontaneous generation by optically demonstrating that putrefaction did not occur in the presence of dust-free air. His experiments with the dispersion of light beams by colloidal suspensions resulted in this phenomenon being named the Tyndall effect. The effect is responsible for the blue colour of the sky. Tyndall, John Tyndall, John (1820-1893), physicien irlandais, c©l¨bre pour ses ©tudes sur les collo¯des. Tyndall naquit   Leighlin Bridge, dans le comt© de Carlow, en Irlande, et fit ses ©tudes   l'universit© de Marbourg, en Allemagne. Il devint professeur de philosophie naturelle   l'Institution royale de Grande-Bretagne en 1854 et succ©da au chimiste et physicien Michael Faraday comme directeur de l'institution en 1867. Les principaux domaines de recherche de Tyndall furent la nature du son, de la lumi¨re et de la chaleur radiante. € Marbourg, o¹ il ©tudia la chimie avec Robert Wilhelm Bunsen, il fit une s©rie de recherches dans le domaine du diamagn©tisme. En 1869, il r©futa la th©orie de la g©n©ration spontan©e. Il d©montra, par des moyens optiques, que la putr©faction ne se produit pas en pr©sence d'air exempt de poussi¨re. Ses exp©rimentations sur la dispersion des rayons lumineux par des suspensions collo¯dales aboutirent   la description du ph©nom¨ne appel© depuis effet Tyndall.
