VARIOUS ECSTASIES
He whose testicles are crushed or whose male member is cut off shall not enter the assembly of the Lord. - Deuteronomy 23:1 *************************** You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them. - Ray Bradbury
Monday, March 31, 2008
LIKE WOW MAN... A REALLY, REALLY BAD TRIP!!
I went shopping at Wal-Mart with my wife this evening.
I survived the teeming hordes of walking dead to tell you my story.
We were in the packaged meats section, and Mrs. Snave told me she misread a "Stadium Brats" label as "Sodium Brats". But I knew she read it correctly because I had already noticed a new Oscar Meyer Lunchables product called "Sodium Junior".
The plastic fumes started to get to me after about five minutes, and I got really thirsty, but I was afraid to drink from the drinking fountain for fear of taking in too much polystyrene.
They were selling some cheap towels imprinted with Hannah Montana designs. What a great idea for if you are at a slumber party and you run out of buttwipe.

Abstract
Figure 1 ). A control experiment (N=21) using black text on shades of gray (to increase generalizablity to Internet browser settings), also found significant main effects for background gray level and style, and several interactions ( Figure 2 ). In general these results suggest that there is no one foreground/background combination, font, or word style which leads to the fastest RT (i.e. best readability), but rather a designer must consider how each variable affects the other(s). suggestions, arguments, comments are welcome: mail me For another approach to reception theories, see my page Who Controls the Media and Their Meanings? These are general positions within the understanding that the 'meaning' of a text is what happens when the reader reads it. The positions presuppose various attitudes towards such considerations as:
    • the question of in what sense a text, ink-marks on a page or electrons on a screen, exists,
    • the extent to which knowledge is objective or subjective,
    • the question of whether the world as we experience it is culturally constructed or has an essential existence,
    • how the gap, historically, culturally and semiotically (as reading is a decoding of signs which have varying meanings) between the reader and the writer is bridged, and the extent to which it is bridged,
    • the question of the extent to which interpretation is a public act, conditioned by the particular material and cultural circumstances of the reader, vs the extent to which reading is a private act governed by a response to the relatively independent codes of the text

    30. The Numbers In Various Writing Systems
Numbers 110, in syllabaries, consonantal scripts, and sign.
    http://www.zompist.com/scripts.html
The Numbers in Various Writing Systems
As a supplement to my list of the numbers from 1 to 10 in over a thousand languages, here are the numbers written in a few native writing systems, plus ASL. Note that these are the names of the numbers, exactly as they are represented in the numbers list (like "one, two, three"), and not symbols for numbers (like 1, 2, 3). In some cases, like Japanese, it would be rather strange to write out the numbers this way the Japanese would use the Chinese or Western symbols, instead. The samples are arranged by type of writing system , rather than by language family, as in the main list. Field notes are provided for recognizing each type in the wild.
    Morphosyllabic scripts
Chinese characters each represent a single syllable, and in the vast majority of cases a single morpheme. They don't represent ideas directly . Most characters can be decomposed into two simpler characters, a radical vaguely indicating the meaning plus a phonetic giving the approximate pronunciation.

    Mental Health Disorders
Complete list of psychiatric disorders and the adult symptoms of mental health disorders. Also overviews of mental illness, anxiety disorders, depression, childhood psychiatric disorders and more.
    Just a note of caution:
This list is intended for use by adults only. It is not meant to replace a licensed mental health professional's diagnosis, advice and care. Please keep in mind, that just because a person exhibits certain symptoms of a disorder, it does not necessarily mean the individual is afflicted with the disorder. (It may be confusing, but certain symptoms can be associated with any number of disorders.) Only a licensed mental health professional can make that diagnosis and assessment. If you have any questions regarding mental health symptoms (symptoms of psychiatric disorders), we suggest you contact a licensed mental health professional. Remember, the psychiatric symptom's list is strictly intended as an educational tool and it's use for any other purpose is strictly prohibited. Also, keep in mind, the symptom's list is not complete and covers mostly symptoms of adult psychiatric disorders. It is meant to give our visitors some insight into various mental health disorders.

    Discussion
Many science fiction and fantasy writers are "non-religious" (or, more accurately, their "religion" is writing science fiction and fantasy in the strictly sociological sense of what constitutes an important motivation or community for them). Many other SF/F authors have stated a preference for secular philosophies such as atheism, agnosticism, and in some cases humanism. Some writers have a highly individualized religiosity or belief system which doesn't fit into into a traditional classification (e.g. Philip K. Dick). English language science fiction and fantasy authors who are adherents of traditional religious faiths usually belong to a branch of Christianity (these include Catholics, Anglicans, Latter-day Saints, Protestants, etc.) or are Jews. Religious adherents from other religions (Islam, Hindu, Baha'i, Tenrikyo, Wiccan) are listed here as well. We have been unable to identify any Sikh SF/F writers. Buddhist SF/F writers are very rare. • There are more reasons every day for me to love Alice Coote. The latest — her recital on the EMI D©but label, released in 2003. I heard this for the first time perhaps a year ago, but only the first half, and I never got to hear it again. This week I bought it at a bargain bin price and swooned anew. I remembered that it was drop dead gorgeous, but remembering that is one thing; drowning in it is another. What perplexes me is that she doesn't appear to have recorded another solo album since this one. She ought. Just for me. I'm so devoted. Despite the higher prices (yes, I'm still bitter about that) I went on Monday afternoon to book myself in for second helpings of two operas I don't much like or want to see again, in order to see somebody I do like sing in them. Antoinette in La boh¨me tomorrow night (and, as a bonus, lovely Taryn Fiebig as Musetta) and Joshua Bloom as Escamillo on the 28th. I really had to push myself into the Carmen — I had at least hoped I could make it to one of the few performances where Joshua and Kirsten Chavez coincide, but they're sold out. (That's
