Alfred Russel Wallace
Alfred Russel Wallace was born in a small village of Usk, which is located in Wales. Shortly after finishing school, Wallace's father passed away and he joined his brother surveying countries. Wallace continued to do work with the brother surveying countries for four years. Through this experience, he acquired his talent for observation and detailed recordings which helped immensely later on in his life. Alfred Wallace is best known for his theory of natural selection . From 1854 to 1862 he and his mentor Henry Walter Bates explored the Amazon River. It was during this expedition that he saw differences between the animals in Asia and the animals in Australia. From this observation he put a line between the Malay islands and Celebes which he called the Wallace’s Line. Out of this experience came his theory of natural selection. After he thought about this theory he wrote a manuscript called “On the Tendency of Varieties to Depart Indefinitely from the Original Type.” Instead of just sending his manuscript straight to the publishers, he first sent it to Charles Darwin . At this time Darwin saw so many similarities with his theory that he decided to publish his theory right away. To this day, Wallace’s greatest accomplishment was to get Charles Darwin to publish his own theory.

Life
Wallace was born at Usk, Monmouthshire. He attended grammar school in Hertford, but left when his family lost their remaining property. He worked for his older brother William in his surveying business, and between 1840 and 1843 spent his time surveying in the west of England and Wales. In 1844 he was hired as a master at the Collegiate School in Leicester. In 1845 his brother William died and Wallace returned to run the surveying business.
In 1848, Wallace together with another naturalist, Henry Walter Bates (whom he met in Leicester), left for Brazil to collect specimens in the Amazon Rainforest. Unfortunately, a large part of his collection got annihilated when his ship caught fire on return to Britain in 1852.
From 1854 to 1862, he travelled through the "Malay Archipelago" or East Indies (now Malaysia and Indonesia), to collect specimens and study nature. One of his better known discoveries here is the gliding tree frog Rhacophorus nigropalmatus, Wallace's flying frog.

Wallace, Alfred Russel Wallace, Alfred Russel (1823-1913), British naturalist, who independently developed a theory of evolution by natural selection contemporaneously with Charles Darwin. Wallace’s work provided a spur for Darwin’s publication of The Origin of Species (1859) following a joint paper presented to the Linnean Society of London in 1858. Wallace is also regarded as one of the founders of modern biogeography—the study of the distribution of flora and fauna over the globe through time with an underlying assumption of the mutability of species. Wallace’s early education reflected the genteel poverty into which he was born in Monmouthshire, Wales, on January 8, 1823: adequate, but not inspiring. Unlike many naturalists he was not a collector as a child, and from the age of 15 he was apprenticed as a surveyor to his elder brother, William. The outdoor life gradually stimulated an interest in the plants, insects, people, and geological features of the land. In the 1840s he expanded his reading in natural history, geology, and evolution, and began a life-long friendship with Henry Walter Bates, later renowned for his work on mimicry among insects, which Wallace extended in the 1860s to explain polymorphic imitation in species found in the Malay Archipelago (now Malaysia and Indonesia).

Disillusioned with life as a surveyor, Wallace persuaded Bates to accompany him to South America as a professional collector. From 1848 to 1852 Wallace explored the Negro and Uaup©s rivers. He amassed a large collection of specimens, the majority of which were lost when the ship in which Wallace was returning home sank. If the South American period had failed to provide the capital to make Wallace independent, he had at least gained both a reputation as a naturalist, and evidence for his growing interest in species, their mutability, and the support that this provided for evolution. He was struck by the boundaries that the immense rivers of the Amazon basin represented, and the presence and differential adaptation of species to be found on each land mass. Evidence of his growing evolutionary thinking can be discerned in Wallace’s successful

WRITTEN AROUND 1902! This small volume was commenced as a review article on Professor Percival Lowell's book, Mars and its Canals, with the object of showing that the large amount of new and interesting facts contained in this work did not invalidate the conclusion I had reached in 1902, and stated in my book on Man's Place in the Universe, that Mars was not habitable.
