Su padre, eclesiástico, era canónigo de la pro-catedral de Auckland; cuando, en 1889 pasó a enseñar en el General Theological Seminary de Nueva York, el niño fue enviado a Cornualles. Una vez llegado el padre a Inglaterra para encargarse de la dirección del "Bede College" de Durham, el muchacho se reunió con su familia. Aun antes de haberse graduado en Cambridge, el joven Hugh había escrito dos novelas, de las que destruyó una y publicó la otra cinco años después, como primero de sus libros. Durante este intervalo el autor intentó ejercer algunas ocupaciones; no obstante, insatisfecho, trasladóse a Londres para afianzarse en calidad de escritor. La citada primera novela, El caballo de madera , publicada en 1909, pagó apenas el coste de la copia a máquina del manuscrito; sin embargo, luego de muchas dificultades, Walpole obtuvo el puesto de crítico literario del periódico londinense The Standard Con la novela Fortaleza , de 1913, empezó verdaderamente a vivir de su actividad de escritor.
