Washington (April 5, 1856 - November 15, 1915) was an African-American educator born into slavery in Piedmont, Virginia. After the American Civil War, when the Emancipation Proclamation was enforced, he worked with his mother Jane as a salt-packer in a West Virginia facility, and, when he could, attended school. At 16, he entered the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Virginia, a school intended to train black teachers.
Booker T. Washington later founded and served as president of what is now Tuskegee University, an academic and vocational school for blacks during Reconstruction. He was to become one of America's foremost educators of his time. He also recruited George Washington Carver to teach and conduct research at Tuskegee.
Active in politics, he was routinely consulted by Congressmen and Presidents about the appointment of blacks to political positions. He worked and socialized with many white politicians and notables. He argued that self-reliance was the key to improved conditions for blacks in the US. However, for his advice to blacks to "compromise" and accept segregation, other black activists of the time, such as W. E. B. DuBois, labeled him an "accomodator".
Dr. Washington was instrumental in the creation of over 100 small schools for the education and betterment in Negroes in Virginia and other portions of the South, funded partly by his friend millionaire industrialist and philanthropist Henry Huttleston Rogers, who rose to become a Vice President of John Rockefeller's Standard Oil Trust and was the builder of the Virginian Railway. Although Rogers died the month before, Dr. Washington rode in Rogers' personal train car on a special excursion tour along the newly completed Virginian Railway in June, 1909.

Boston Leadership Builders Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was born a slave in Virginia; he rose to become educator of, and spokesman for, his race. In 1881 he was chosen to run the Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama. His autobiography Up from Slavery was originally published in 1901. This volume is dedicated to my Wife Margaret James Washington And to my Brother John H. Washington Whose patience, fidelity, and hard work have gone far to make the work at Tuskegee successful.
    Preface
This volume is the outgrowth of a series of articles, dealing with incidents in my life, which were published consecutively in the Outlook . While they were appearing in that magazine I was constantly surprised at the number of requests which came to me from all parts of the country, asking that the articles be permanently preserved in book form. I am most grateful to the Outlook for permission to gratify these requests. I have tried to tell a simple, straightforward story, with no attempt at embellishment. My regret is that what I have attempted to do has been done so imperfectly. The greater part of my time and strength is required for the executive work connected with the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, and in securing the money necessary for the support of the institution. Much of what I have said has been written on board trains, or at hotels or railroad stations while I have been waiting for trains, or during the moments that I could spare from my work while at Tuskegee. Without the painstaking and generous assistance of Mr. Max Bennett Thrasher I could not have succeeded in any satisfactory degree.

Washington was born on April 5, 1856, on a plantation in Franklin County, Virginia, the son of a slave. Following the American Civil War , his family moved to Malden, West Virginia, where he worked in a salt furnace and in coal mines, attending school whenever he could. From 1872 to 1875 he attended a newly founded school for blacks, Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute (now Hampton University). After graduation he taught for two years in Malden and then studied at Wayland Seminary, in Washington, D.C. In 1879 he became an instructor at Hampton Institute, where he helped to organize a night school and was in charge of the industrial training of 75 Native Americans. The school was so successful that in 1881 the founder of Hampton Institute, the American educator Samuel Chapman Armstrong, appointed Washington organizer and principal of a black school in Tuskegee, Alabama (now Tuskegee University). Washington made the institution into a major centre for industrial and agricultural training and in the process became a well-known public speaker.

Washington, Booker T(aliaferro) Washington, Booker T(aliaferro) (1856-1915), American educator, who urged black people to attempt to uplift themselves through educational attainments and economic advancement. On September 18, 1895, in Atlanta, Georgia, Washington made his famous compromise speech. In this address he urged blacks to accept their inferior social position for the present and to strive to raise themselves through vocational training and economic self-reliance. Many whites, pleased by his views, and many blacks, awed by his prestige, accepted Washington as the chief spokesperson of the American black. More militant blacks, such as the American writer and sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois, objected to such quiescent tactics, however, and strongly opposed Washington. Washington founded several organizations, including the National Negro Business League, to further black advancement. He died on November 14, 1915, at Tuskegee. Among his books are
