Webster, John Webster, John (c. 1578-c. 1632), English playwright. Little is known of Webster’s life. He was the son of a coachmaker, and collaborated with many of the major playwrights of his day, including Thomas Dekker (notably for the comedy, Westward Ho , c. 1604), John Marston, and Thomas Heywood. He is principally remembered, however, for his two great tragedies, The White Devil (1612) and The Duchess of Malfi (c. 1613), the latter of which remains particularly popular and is frequently revived. Webster’s scenes of extreme emotion, and his plots of fratricide, multiple murder, and incest—presented in a highly wrought rhetorical language—go far to explain his continued popularity. While criticized by some for a lack of consistency in plot and motivation, he is admired by others for the openness and ambiguity this creates and for the complexity of characterization it provides. Indeed, Webster’s fragmentary style often echoes the fragmentation of the universe his characters inhabit. He offers us a world whose moral centre is nebulous, a world where absolutes are tenuous, and where characters confront both their own flaws and those of humankind. His sustained questioning of human life and values in the face of an apparently chaotic universe highlights the uncertainty of human laws and divine justice, while his characterization prevents an over-easy sympathy from his audience.

Since o'er shady groves they hover
And with leaves and flowers do cover
The friendless bodies of unburied men.
    Call unto his funeral dole
The ant, the field-mouse, and the mole,

Transcribed from a supplemental volume of Kansas: a cyclopedia of state history, embracing events, institutions, industries, counties, cities, towns, prominent persons, etc. ... / with a supplementary volume devoted to selected personal history and reminiscence. Standard Pub. Co. Chicago : 1912. 3 v. in 4. : front., ill., ports.; 28 cm. Vols. I-II edited by Frank W. Blackmar. Transcribed October 2002 by Carolyn Ward. This volume is identified at the Kansas State Historical Society as microfilm LM196. It is a single volume 3. John Webster losses he continued to forge ahead and became a heavy breeder and shipper of stock. He had planted seven miles of Osage orange fence on his land, and about the time it got nicely grown barbed wire fence was first placed on the market, and his labor and expense were to a great extent thrown away. The crowning misfortune of his Kansas experience came in 1886, when he became involved in a bank failure, which left him a bankrupt with some unpaid debts. He remained in the State until 1905, when he removed to Livingstone, Mont., where he farmed until 1910, when he located near Perry, Okla. While he was unfortunate in his business career in Kansas, he was one of the most progressive men who settled in Washington county and was an active factor in its development, and one of Washington county's most valuable citizens. Mr. Webster was twice married. His first wife was Miss Eliza Molyneaux, the daughter of a French Huguenot, who came to Canada, whom he married in 1862, and who died in 1871, leaving three children: Fannie M.
