Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900)
Wilde was an Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, poet and critic, and a celebrity in late 19th century London. Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin on 16 October 1854. His father was a successful surgeon and his mother a writer and literary hostess. Wilde was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford. While at Oxford, Wilde became involved in the aesthetic movement. After he graduated, he moved to London to pursue a literary career. Drama and tragedy marred Wilde's private life. He married Constance Lloyd in 1884 and they had two sons, but in 1891 Wilde began an affair with Lord Alfred Douglas, nicknamed 'Bosie'. In April 1895, Wilde sued Bosie's father, the Marquis of Queensberry, for libel, after the Marquis has accused him of being homosexual. Wilde lost and, after details of his private life were revealed during the trial, was arrested and tried for gross indecency. He was sentenced to two years of hard labour. While in prison he composed a long letter to Douglas, posthumously published under the title 'De Profundis' . His wife took their children to Switzerland and adopted the name 'Holland'. Wilde was released with his health irrevocably damaged and his reputation ruined. He spent the rest of his life in Europe, publishing 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol' in 1898. He died in Paris on 30 November 1900.

OSCAR WILDE QUOTES A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal. OSCAR WILDE, The Critic as Artist Art never expresses anything but itself. OSCAR WILDE, The Decay of Lying Everything is dangerous, my dear fellow. If it wasn't so, life wouldn't be worth living. OSCAR WILDE, The importance of Being Earnest All art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril. OSCAR WILDE, The Picture of Dorian Gray As long as war is regarded as wicked, it will always have its fascination. When it is looked upon as vulgar, it will cease to be popular. OSCAR WILDE, The Critic as Artist The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. OSCAR WILDE, The Picture of Dorian Gray Democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the people for the people. OSCAR WILDE, The Soul of Man Under Socialism Men marry because they are tired; women because they are curious. Both are disappointed. OSCAR WILDE, A Woman of No Importance Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes.

  • Neil McKenna Hello MS How does one proceed to write a biography on a dead author? NM Well, it's a fairly daunting task. I think you have to begin at the beginning. I started reading everything that had ever been written by Oscar Wilde, and I read that, and I thought about it, and I went one step further. And I went to the four major archives, where most of the Oscar Wilde material is kept and to a lot of minor archives. So I traveled from London to Oxford, to Austin in Texas, and to Los Angeles, and to many small and forgotten libraries in Cambridge and Worthing and other cities.
My goal was to try and read every document written by or about Oscar Wilde, which would give me an insight into his life; and I think I succeeded in that.
By the time I'd finished I had 10,000 cards with notes on them. Much of it was irrelevant, but I needed to know it. But about 30% was relevant, and I did use it. And I think that's the only way you can do it. You have to get down into the material, and you have to look at the original letters, at the memoirs, at the letters of his circle, of his wife, of his son, of his friends, of his enemies in order to fully understand it. MS There are already many biographies about Oscar Wilde's life. Did you disapprove of them?

Articles About Wilde, Oscar
Oscar Wilde's West October 19, 2007 Of the countless stories, novels, and plays inspired by and featuring Oscar Wilde, a significant number bear the title, "The Wilde West." One of thesea 1988 farce by Charles Marowitzis set in Leadville, Colorado, during Wilde's lecture tour of North America in 1882. In it, Wilde appears for his lecture in a saloon, only to find it occupied by the trial of a handsome young bank robbera member of Jesse James gang. Wilde, turned lawyer, successfully defends the guilty thief while Belle Starr and outlaw Jesse debate the relative merits of their autobiographies. In his preface, Marowitz explains that the play "arbitrarily yokes together" the myths of Oscar Wilde and the Old West. But as it turns out, the playwright's intuitive link between Wilde and the West was well founded.

Life He was born Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde on October 16, 1854, in Dublin, and educated at Trinity College, Dublin. As a youngster he was exposed to the brilliant literary talk of the day at his mother's Dublin salon. At Oxford Wilde came under the influence of aesthetic innovators such as English writers Walter Pater and John Ruskin. As an aesthete, the eccentric young Wilde wore long hair and velvet knee breeches. His rooms were filled with various objets d'art such as sunflowers, peacock feathers, and blue china; Wilde claimed to aspire to the perfection of the china. His attitudes and manners were ridiculed in the comic periodical Punch and satirized in the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera Patience (1881). Nonetheless, his wit, brilliance, and flair won him many devotees.
