That s the good stuff, Ginny, that s the stuff that brings respite from daily restiveness and yes Virginia, this is scant a clause. Mein Gott but after reading this you can t help but mimic steal and emulate and force the insides of your own heads out in front of your eyes. Here s a tip: listen while staring at your own walls, and don t get flustered when your own mind wanders. Unless, of course, you re listening because you re writing an essay on prosodic patterning in podcasts, or the use of technology in oral storytelling of Virginia Woolf. Woolf, Virginia
Virginia Woolf has attained legendary status as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. The feminist author's modernist writings are considered essential to understanding the history of the novel. Woolf's experiments with fiction and stream-of-consciousness narrative rank among the most innovative of her time and continue to hold their weight in the current age.
Born in 1882, Virginia was educated at home in London by her father, Sir Leslie Stephen who gave his daughter unlimited access to his extensive library, and various tutors. It is estimated that Virginia's early losses contributed to her unstable mental health, such as her mother's death in 1895; Virginia suffered her first breakdown soon thereafter. Her half-sister, Stella, who had taken over the household following her mother's death, died two years later in 1897, followed by her father in 1904. Soon after her father's death, which prompted another breakdown, Virginia and her sister Vanessa moved to Bloomsbury, where Woolf wrote for the Times Literary Supplement. This experience helped her produce hundreds of essays and book reviews. In Bloomsbury, Virginia and Vanessa (a painter) became essential members of the Bloomsbury group, an influential gathering of intellectuals that included author E.M. Forster and economist John Maynard Keynes.

    The Waves

    Virginia Woolf
During the two years it took Virginia Woolf to complete The Waves , the demands of Hogarth Press, social pleasures and duties, even the noise of a jazz band in a nearby hotel, interfered with her work. Scattered through Woolf's journals and letters from 1929 to 1932 are frequent references to the novel she found compelling, at times agonizing, to write. Virginia Woolf, the English novelist and essayist, first conceived of The Waves (original title: The Moths ) as she was finishing To the Lighthouse . One of the most innovative stream-of-consciousness novelists of the twentieth century, Woolf considered The Waves The complexity of the plot strained Woolf's energies. The Waves traces the lives of a group of friends from childhood to late middle age, revealing their personalities through their reflections on themselves and one another. The main text is divided by sections describing the rising and setting of the sun over the waves. In her diary she wrote "Never have I screwed my brain so tight over a book." The 200 words she produced after one morning's work, she wrote to David Garnett, were "crazy as broken china." In her writing hut in the garden of Monk's House, Woolf waited for her husband's opinion. Leonard Woolf proclaimed it a masterpiece. But she was delighted when Vita Sackville-West found the novel .so bad that only a small dog that had been fed on gin could have written it." After his wife's suicide by drowning in 1941, Leonard Woolf had inscribed on a tablet in the garden where her ashes lay buried the final words of

VIRGINIA WOOLF QUOTES Boredom is the legitimate kingdom of the philanthropic. VIRGINIA WOOLF, letter, Sep. 10, 1918 Madness is terrific I can assure you, and not to be sniffed at; and in its lava I still find most of the things I write about. It shoots out of one everything shaped, final, not in mere driblets, as sanity does. VIRGINIA WOOLF, Letters To write weekly, to write daily, to write shortly, to write for busy people catching trains in the morning or for tired people coming home in the evening, is a heartbreaking task for men who know good writing from bad. They do it, but instinctively draw out of harm's way anything precious that might be damaged by contact with the public, or anything sharp that might irritate its skin. VIRGINIA WOOLF, The Common Reader Nothing has really happened until it has been recorded. VIRGINIA WOOLF It is worth mentioning, for future reference, that the creative power which bubbles so pleasantly in beginning a new book quiets down after a time, and one goes on more steadily. Doubts creep in. Then one becomes resigned. Determination not to give in, and the sense of an impending shape keep one at it more than anything. VIRGINIA WOOLF

    Introduction
Print this section Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), British novelist, essayist, and critic, who helped create the modern novel. Her writing often explores the concepts of time, memory, and people’s inner consciousness, and is remarkable for its humanity and depth of perception. Before the early 1900s, fiction emphasized plot as well as detailed descriptions of characters and settings. Events in the external world, such as a marriage, murder, or deception, were the most important aspects of a story. Characters' interior, or mental, lives served mainly to prepare for or motivate such meaningful external occurrences. Woolf's novels, however, emphasized patterns of consciousness rather than sequences of events in the external world. Influenced by the works of French writer Marcel Proust and Irish writer James Joyce , among others, Woolf strove to create a literary form that would convey inner life. To this end, she elaborated a technique known as
