    Implicit Differentiation
In many examples, especially the ones derived from differential equations, the variables involved are not linked to each other in an explicit way. Most of the time, they are linked through an implicit formula, like F x y ) =0. Once x is fixed, we may find y through numerical computations. (By some fancy theorems, we may formally show that y may indeed be seen as a function of x over a certain interval). The question becomes what is the derivative , at least at a certain a point? The method of implicit differentiation answers this concern. Let us illustrate this through the following example. Example. Find the equation of the tangent line to the ellipse
    x y
at the point (2,3). One way is to find y as a function of x from the above equation, then differentiate to find the slope of the tangent line. We will leave it to the reader to do the details of the calculations. Here, we will use a different method. In the above equation, consider y as a function of x
    x y x

and use the techniques of differentiation, to get
    From this, we obtain

Partial Differentiation Suppose you want to forecast the weather this weekend in Los Angeles. You construct a formula for the temperature as a function of several environmental variables, each of which is not entirely predictable. Now you would like to see how your weather forecast would change as one particular environmental factor changes, holding all the other factors constant. To do this investigation, you would use the concept of a partial derivative Let the temperature T depend on variables x and y, T = f(x,y). The rate of change of f with respect to x (holding y constant) is called the partial derivative of f with respect to x and is denoted by f x (x,y). Similarly, the rate of change of f with respect to y is called the partial derivative of f with respect to y and is denoted by f y (x,y). We define f x (x,y) =
    lim
    D x
    f(x+ D x,y)-f(x,y) D x
    f y (x,y) =
    lim
    D x
    f(x,y+ D x)-f(x,y) D x
Do you see the similarity beween these and the limit definition of a function of one variable?
    Example
    Let f(x,y) xy Then f x (x,y)

    A Matlab Differentiation Matrix Suite
This is a MATLAB software suite, created by JAC Weideman and SC Reddy, consisting of seventeen functions for solving differential equations by the spectral collocation (a.k.a. pseudospectral) method. It includes functions for computing differentiation matrices of arbitrary order corresponding to Chebyshev, Hermite, Laguerre, Fourier, and sinc interpolants. It also includes FFT-based routines for Fourier, Chebyshev and sinc differentiation. Auxiliary functions are included for incorporating boundary conditions, performing interpolation using barycentric formulas, and computing roots of orthogonal polynomials. In the accompanying paper it is demonstrated how to use the package for solving eigenvalue, boundary value, and initial value problems arising in the fields of special functions, quantum mechanics, nonlinear waves, and hydrodynamic stability.

The paper has been published in ACM TOMS, Vol. 26, pp. 465519 (2000). ( TOMS Vol 26
    Note 1
The first version of the suite was tested under MATLAB Ver 5.2. Larry Shampine reported a few bugs under MATLAB 6, which were fixed in the files below as indicated. Yet we still make NO GUARANTEES about the correctness of the codes. Please contact us at

    Implicit Differentiation
Suggested Prerequesites: The definition of the derivative The chain rule There are two ways to define functions, implicitly and explicitly . Most of the equations we have dealt with have been explicit equations, such as y x -3, so that we can write y f x ) where f x x -3. But the equation 2 x y = 3 describes the same function. This second equation is an implicit definition of y as a function of x . As there is no real distinction between the appearance of x or y in the second form, this equation is also an implicit definition of x as a function of y Not all implicit equations can be restated explicitly in a single equation. For example, the implicit equation x y = 9 needs two explicit equations, which are the top and bottom halves of a cricle respectively, to define the functional relation completely. And xy = sin( y x y (the magenta curves in the figure at the left) cannot be solved for either y as an explicit function of x or x as an explicit function of y . This implicit function is considered in Example 2 Perhaps surprisingly, we can take the derivative of implicit functions just as we take the derivative of explicit functions. We simply take the derivative of each side of the equation, remembering to treat the dependent variable as a function of the dependent variable, apply the rules of differentiation, and solve for the derivative. Returning to our original example:

The different usage between able and capable is ' able ' has a broader meaning in one's ability but ' capable ' shows one's ability in a more specialized aspect. She is an able teacher. ( She is a teacher with quality ) She is a capable teacher. ( She has the ability to be a teacher ) Capable also shows a sense of possibility whereas there is no such usage with able The situation is capable of improvement. 34. Reconcilable Differences? Standards-Based Teaching And Differentiation // Carol

Reconcilable Differences? Standards-Based Teaching and Differentiation Standards-based instruction and differentiated learning can be compatible approaches in today's classrooms. Carol Ann Tomlinson Recent demands for more standards-based teaching can feel like a huge impediment to encouraging differentiated instruction, especially for teachers and principals who recognize student variance and want to address it appropriately. A relatively new phenomenon (at least in its current form), standards-based instruction dominates the educational terrain in a time of great academic diversity in contemporary classrooms. In fact, standards-based instruction and the high-stakes testing that drives it can often feel like a locomotive rolling over everything in its path, including individualized learning. When any phenomenon in education suggests that we may have to jettison common sense and good pedagogy, we must first examine it in light of what we know about high-quality instruction. In other words, if we understand how standards-based teaching does or does not align with sound teaching and learning practices, we can then approach what look like barriers to differentiation. In truth, the conflict between focusing on standards and focusing on individual learners' needs exists only if we use standards in ways that cause us to abandon what we know about effective curriculum and instruction.

Friday, May 26, 2006 16:00 Apple products are rarely leaked, so I was a bit surprised to see Dashcode being distributed on the web . It's not a big surprise to see this app, as there have been screenshots of it on the web for very long already
In the early days of 2005 I was working with Austin Sarner on a project called WidgetKit , which was intended to be similar to the then non-existent DashCode. Austin decided to stop actively developing it as he figured it wasn't an app that would sell well enough. Never the less, the application icon for WidgetKit was made.
I just can't keep myself from being a bit surprised by the fact that the Dashcode icon from Apple resembles the WidgetKit icon I made closely. I'm not accusing anybody here, since I have no idea when the icon was created, and it really doesn't matter, but the similarity is striking none the less.
