Division of Biology of Growth and Reproduction, Department of Pediatrics,
University Cantonal Hospital, 1211 Geneva 14, Switzerland Fetal sexual differentiation is a very complicated series of events actively programmed, at appropriate critical periods of fetal life, which involves both genetic and hormonal factors leading to the sexual dimorphism observed at birth ( Table 1 Sexual differentiation is conformed in the human during four successive steps: the constitution of the genetic sex, the differentiation of the gonads, the differentiation of the internal and the external genital tractus and the differentiation of the brain and the hypothalamus. Genetic sex The critical role of the Y chromosome and of male hormones in male orientation is well documented, the development of the female sexual differentiation occurring in the absence of male genetic determinants. Genetic sex is established at the time of fecundation by the nature of the chromosomal composition of the spermatozoon, whether it contains a Y chromosome which has a dominant effect (23,Y constitution), or an X chromosome (23,X constitution). The development of such gonad into a testis depends upon the presence of the Y chromosome (59), whereas the absence of the Y chromosome will result in female development, irrespective of the number of X chromosomes (12,31,42). This effect was thought to be due to the presence of a unique gene located on the short arm of the Y chromosome (11).

Geology 212 Petrology Prof. Stephen A. Nelson Magmatic Differentiation Chemical Variation in Rock Suites Soon after geologists began doing chemical analyses of igneous rocks they realized that rocks emplaced in any given restricted area during a short amount of geologic time were likely related to the same magmatic event. Evidence for some kind of relationship between the rocks, and therefore between the magmas that cooled to form the rocks came from plotting variation diagrams. A variation diagram is a plot showing how each oxide component in a rock varies with some other oxide component. Because SiO usually shows the most variation in any given suite of rocks, most variation diagrams plot the other oxides against SiO as shown in the diagram here, although any other oxide could be chosen for plotting on the x-axis. Plots that show relatively smooth trends of variation of the components suggested that the rocks might be related to one another through some process. Of course, in order for the magmas to be related to one another, they must also have been intruded or erupted within a reasonable range of time. Plotting rocks of Precambrian age along with those of Tertiary age may show smooth variation, but it is unlikely that the magmas were related to one another. If magmas are related to each other by some processes, that process would have to be one that causes magma composition to change. Any process that causes magma composition to change is called

Site Index Cell enlargement Non-lignified plant tissues are supported by the pressure of cell contents against the (primary) cell walls of their tissues. This turgor pressure is caused by the uptake of water by the cytoplasm of the cells so that pressure is exerted at the plasma membrane on the cell wall. Water tends to move into the cell because of the osmotic effect of the low-molecular weight solutes in the vacuole. Water movement through the soil, plant and air can be understood through the concept of water potential . This is measured in pressure units (bars, Pascals etc.) and water always moves from high to low potential, whatever the reason for the difference in potential. Pure water at ground level and air at 100% relative humidity are at zero potential. In order to keep growing, cells need to keep accumulating sugars and salts in their vacuoles to maintain a low water potential and offset the dilution as they take up water. Water uptake through the semi-permeable plasma-membrane and tonoplast continues as long as the water potential of the vacuole is lower than the water potential outside the cell. Each cell in the plant "sits" on a water potential gradient from the soil to the atmosphere. As long as the water potential is lower in the cells than outside, the plant can take up water. So cells in the leaves at the top of a tall tree will be at lower water potential than those down below.

The big news today is that US portal giant AOL acquired leading social networking site Bebo for $850 million. There has been a lot of coverage about the business aspects of this deal, but from a product view I don't think this will make much headway for either company. Bebo is a distant third to MySpace and Facebook in the social network market (especially in the key US market), while AOL is a perennial also-ran nowadays when compared to Google, Microsoft and Yahoo. While this deal will see innovations such as AIM integrating with Bebo (Whoa! Real-time Social Networking!), let's look at the bigger picture. Ultimately we're talking about two middle of the road Web brands.
    The Facts
The Wall St Journal's Kara Swisher has a good analysis of the acquisition. Her video interview at Bebo's London office also had some interesting facts. In the video Bebo president Joanna Shields said that the UK is Bebo's strongest market - they have 9 million users there. Globally Bebo has 36 million users worldwide, which according to Shields puts them 3rd worldwide (behind MySpace and Facebook). However, the other side of that coin is that Bebo is relatively weak in the US market, where MySpace and Facebook dominate.

Without meaning, some students become distracted and others do mediocre work. A WebQuest is an inquiry-based approach to learning that provides a meaningful task and quality resources to complete this task. A WebQuest can also be tailored to provide a variety of resources such as audio, video, visuals, and text. Choose a WebQuest that could be adapted for use in your classroom. Reformat the WebQuest for use as a PowerQuest using PowerPoint. Or, use Word to construct a WebQuest that adapts elements from a number of different WebQuests. You don't have to develop an entire WebQuest to bring meaningfulness to an activity. Use PowerPoint as a tool to present scenarios or pose questions. For example, which cat would you choose for your story? Or, what questions do we have about these wetlands or historical photographs? Create a PowerPoint slide that poses a question.

The differentiation/retrodifferentiation program of human U937 leukemia cells is accompanied by changes of VCP/p97
Catharina Bertram Nils von Neuhoff Britta Skawran Doris Steinemann Brigitte Schlegelberger and Ralf Hass BMC Cell Biology doi:10.1186/1471-2121-9-12 Published:
    Abstract (provisional)
    Background
Retrodifferentiation and regained proliferative capacity of growth-arrested human leukemic cells after monocyte-like differentiation requires proteolytic activities together with distinct regulatory factors. The AAA ATPase valosin-containing protein (VCP/p97) contributes to protein degradation and cell cycle regulation, respectively, and it was of interest to study a possible role of VCP/p97 during this myelomonocytic differentiation and retrodifferentiation.
    Results
    Conclusions
The findings demonstrated that monocytic differentiation and G0/G1 growth arrest in human U937 leukemia cells was accompanied by an increase in VCP/p97 expression and a distinct subcellular distribution to be reverted during retrodifferentiation. Taken together with a down-modulation of VCP/p97 by siRNA these results suggested an association of this AAA ATPase in the differentiation/retrodifferentiation program.

Chapter 9.05: Quantal Mitoses and a Model for Limb Morphogenesis Over the past few decades numerous scientists have called for a unification of the fields of embryo development, genetics, and evolution. Each field has glaring holes in its ability to explain the fundamental phenomena of life. In this book, the author shows how the phenomenon of cell differentiation, considered in its temporal and spatial aspects during embryogenesis, provides a starting point for a unified theory of multicellular organisms (plants, fungi and animals), including their evolution and genetics. This unification is based on the recent discovery of differentiation waves by the author and his colleagues, described in the appendices, and illustrated by a flip movie prepared by a medical artist. To help the reader through the many fields covered, a glossary is included.
