If the primary determinant of a firm's profitability is the attractiveness of the industry in which it operates, an important secondary determinant is its position within that industry. Even though an industry may have below-average profitability, a firm that is optimally positioned can generate superior returns. A firm positions itself by leveraging its strengths. Michael Porter has argued that a firm's strengths ultimately fall into one of two headings: cost advantage and differentiation. By applying these strengths in either a broad or narrow scope, three generic strategies result: cost leadership differentiation , and focus . These strategies are applied at the business unit level. They are called generic strategies because they are not firm or industry dependent. The following table illustrates Porter's generic strategies:

Differentiation Strategy Consulting
Differentiation is a crucial strategy for professional service firms to achieve pre-emptive competitive advantage. In order to be properly conceived, it requires careful consideration of multiple organizational nuances and complex marketplace factors, and a commitment to push past old boundaries. In order to be truly successful, a differentiation strategy must be operationally supported by a market-driven infrastructure. Often, professional service firm leaders find it helpful to begin the differentiation process on a solid footing: we offer them the opportunity to do just that.

Differentiation: A Molten Planet
Internal Structure of Earth Earth's solid body is composed of several layers of varying density (see Figure). The Earth's core is composed of two portions, an inner core of solid iron and an outer core of molten iron (perhaps with some S). Above the core lies the mantle , which is made up of dense silicates, and the crust , which is the outer layer of the solid Earth. The oceans and atmosphere are the outermost layers. Differentiation in the first few 100's of millions of years led to the formation of the core and the mantle and a crust, and initiated the escape of gases from the moving interior that eventually led to the formation of the atmosphere and oceans.
Heating of Early Earth
The earliest Earth was probably an unsorted conglomeration, mostly of silicon compounds, iron and magnesium oxides, and smaller amounts of all the natural elements. It became increasingly hotter as the protoplanet grew. Four different effects led to the heating of our planet:

Implicit Differentiation
Summary
Not all curves in the plane (given by an equation in x and y) are the graphs of functions. However, if it is assumed that for a piece of the curve, the equation determines implicitly a differentiable function y = f(x), then it is possible to find the derivative of f without explicitly finding a formula for y in terms of x. The method is called that of Implicit Differentiation. By the end of your studying, you should know:
  • How to apply the method of Implicit Differentiation.
  • How to find the derivative of the inverse of a function.

How to Implement Differentiation
Differentiating a Unit
The following steps were taken by a school district in North Carolina in order to implement differentiation. The school district began the involved process of beginning differentiation through providing workshops for interested educators during the summer. These educators worked together to prepare differentiated lessons, projects, and learning contracts. In addition, each educator met with the district's coordinator of gifted programs to help in preparing differentiated units, in giving feedback, and in modeling teaching. These teachers were also hired for one week during the summer to work collaboratively on lessons and units. Teachers began differentiating instruction by reviewing the materials they used in the past for teaching a topic or concept.

30 May, 2005 Upgrading from a previous version? - see History for changes. We want to calculate a value f t t n ) that depends on parameters t t n . But, in addition, we want to calculate the first and possibly second derivatives of f t t n ) with respect to t t n . For example, we want to find the maximum or minimum of f t t n ) and want to use an optimisation method involving derivatives. The aim of the automatic differentiation package is to allow us to calculate the derivates using a program that is just a minor modification of the program that calculates f . This greatly reduces the work involved and greatly increases the chances of getting the correct answer. The present version of the automatic differentiation library is a concept testing version. It really works, but is neither complete nor very efficient. The major reference about Automatic Differentiation is Griewank, Andreas (2000) Evaluating derivatives: principles and techniques of algorithmic differentiation. SIAM, Philadelphia.

Partial Differentiation
The usual rules for differentiation apply when dealing with several variables, but we now require to treat the variables one at a time, keeping the others constant. It is for this reason that a new symbol for differentiation is introduced. Consider the function f x y We can consider y fixed, and so treat it as a constant, to get a partial derivative where we have differentiated with respect to x as usual. Or we can treat x as a constant, and differentiate with respect to y , to get Although a partial derivative is itself a function of several variables, we often want to evaluate it at some fixed point, such as ( x y ). We thus often write the partial derivative as x y There are a number of different notations in use to try to help understanding in different situations. All of the following mean the same thing:- x y f x y f x x y ) and D F x y Note also that there is a simple definition of the derivative in terms of a Newton quotient:- provided of course that the limit exists.

Understanding Differentiation In Human Embryonic Stem Cells
ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2007) See also: Researchers know very little about how human embryonic stem cells (hESC) self-renew. To fully understand these cells' self renewal capacity and pluripotency, and their regulation, it is necessary to efficiently generate genetically modified cells and analyze the consequences of elevated and reduced expression of genes. The researchers used "knockdown" technology to reduce the expression of oct4, a gene known to be necessary for self renewal of mouse and human embryonic stem cells. As seen in work done with mouse cells by knockdown and other genetic means, they showed that reducing the amount of oct4 in human ES cells induced differentiation. The researchers then used a plasmid vector to transiently increase levels of oct4 in hESC. This also resulted in differentiation as expected, but with differentiation patterns similar to those seen with the knockdown. This was an unexpected result, because when expression of oct4 is up-regulated in mouse ES cells, they differentiate into a different type of cell than if the expression of oct4 is down-regulated. The research team, led by the University of Minnesota's Meri Firpo, Ph.D., included gene therapy researchers at Los Angeles Children's Hospital, and developmental biologists at the University of Michigan.

In the first section of this chapter we saw the definition of the derivative and we computed a couple of derivatives using the definition.  As we saw in those examples there was a fair amount of work involved in computing the limits and the functions that we worked with were not terribly complicated.

Are You Doing Differentiation Right? Most professional service firms try to differentiate themselves to increase their competitive advantage, but many do so unsuccessfully. You might be surprised by the results of our research, which reveals that the most often-used differentiation approaches are not necessarily the most successful. There is also a correlation between the difficulty of several differentiation approaches and their use and success. What about your firm? Are you choosing the right differentiation strategies? See the Expertise Marketing web site for information on our differentiation strategy consulting

    Differentiation of Syndromes
Differentiation of syndromes is a method of understanding and diagnosing disease by the theories of traditional Chinese medicine. The diagnostic procedure involves an analysis of the clinical data regarding symptoms, physical signs, and disease history, together with information obtained from an application of the four diagnostic methods. Only correct differentiation can give a correct diagnosis and thus a suitable method of treatment. Therefore the four diagnostic methods are the basis of the differentiation of syndromes, and the differentiation of syndromes is the basis of clinical treatment. Furthermore, the effect of clinical treatment is the criteria of judgment for the correctness of the deduced differentiation. These three aspects form an organic connection - a basic law of diagnosis and treatment in traditional Chinese medicine, that is, "applying the treatment on the basis of differentiating syndromes." More about differentiation of syndromes according to the Eight Principles Zang-Fu Organs and the Theories of the Six Channels , including Four Stages of or Wei, Qi, Ying and Xue, and Sanjiao.
