Les Fleurs du Mal
Les Fleurs du Mal (literal trans. "The Flowers of Evil") is a volume of French poetry by Charles Baudelaire , important in the symbolist and modernist movements. The subject matter of these poems deals with themes relating to decadence and eroticism. The initial publication of the book was arranged in five thematically segregated sections:
  • Spleen et Idéal Le Vin Fleurs du Mal Révolte La Mort
The preface to the volume, blasphemously defining Satan as " thrice-great ", and calling boredom the worst of miseries, neatly sets the general tone of what is to follow: Si le viol, le poison, le poignard, l'incendie, N'ont pas encore brode de leurs plaisants dessins Le canevas banal de nos piteux destins, C'est que notre ame, helas! N'es pas assez hardie. If rape and poison, dagger and burning, Have still not embroidered their pleasant designs On the banal canvas of our pitiable destinies, It's because our souls, alas, are not bold enough! The preface concludes with the following malediction: C'est l'Ennui!—l'oeil chargé d'un pleur involontaire

Amazon.com Editorial Review
Begins with the age old tale: boy gets wired on coke, boy meets girl, boy marries girl and goes off travelling with her through europe doing copious amounts of C. and H.
Eventually boy and girl end up more or less in the gutter, ready to commit suicide.
Enter King Lamus: Master Adept/Zen Master/Mentor/Father Figure to rescue them both by helping them to discover their True Will, thereby curing them entirely of their addictions.
t is King Lamus' considered opinion that drugs are tools, to be used wisely and with a specific purpose in mind, going on to make the analogy that the best way to avoid drowning is to learn to swim not to avoid bodies of water.
An intriguing though possibly specious theory. Fun and entertaining read.
This book, from everything I tend to hear from credible sources, is purley fiction and it's rumored that Crowley died penniless and addicted to drugs. Still an interesting perspective on the whole thing and a fun read.

    Charles Baudelaire
Charles Baudelaire was a 19th century French poet, translator, and literary and art critic whose reputation rests primarily on Les Fleurs du mal; which was perhaps the most importantand influential poetry collection published in Europe in the 19th century. Similarly, his Petits po¨mes en prose (1868; "Little Prose Poems") was the most successful and innovative early experiment in prose poetry of the time. Known for his highly controversial, and often dark poetry, as well as his translation of the tales of Edgar Allan Poe Baudelaire's life was filled with drama and strife, from financial disaster to being prosecuted for obscenity and blasphemy. Long after his death many look upon his name as representing depravity and vice: Others see him as being the poet of modern civilization, seeming to speak directly to the 20th century. In his often introspective poetry, Baudelaire revealed himself as a seeker of God without religious beliefs, searching in every manifestation of life for its true significance. His refusal to admit restriction in the poet's choice of theme and his assertion of the poetic power of symbols makes Baudelaire appealing to modern man, as a poet and a critic.

Work
Charles Baudelaire (1821-66) took his themes from city life and introduced many of the preoccupations of Modernism. Charles was born the son of Fran§ois Baudelaire, an ex-priest who was 60 and a widower when he married Caroline Dufa¿s, a penniless orphan of 26. His father died in 1827, and Charles was brought up by his stepfather, Major Jacques Aupick, a brilliant, forceful man who eventually became a general and senator. Relations were initially cordial but Charles worshiped his mother, and relied on her help throughout his life. Charles was packed off to boarding school, expelled, enrolled at the ‰cole de Droit, became addicted to opium, contracted syphilis, and fell into debt. http://www.poetrymagic.co.uk/poets/baudelaire.html
