Aphra Behn Biography Once out of prison, she took advantage of her friendship with Thomas Betterton, who belonged to a theater company at Lincoln's Inn Fields. He played the lead in her first play, The Forced Marriage (1670), which ran successfully for six nights. Behn succeeded again with The Amorous Prince following The Forced Marriage in 1671. Those first two plays were wholly original, but she quickly resorted to the Shakespearean device of adapting the work of others like her play Adbelazer. After the success of The Rover (1677), she was accused of plagiarism and answered the charge in the postscript to the play. It states that no one would have taken notice if her play were not so successful and written by a woman. - see Jenna's page There is not much that is known about Aphra Behn and it is not exactly known why this is so. After over 300 years we do not know Aphra Behn's exact date or place of birth, her maiden name, her parentage, or when she was married, but it is known that she was born in the year 1640. One source stated that her last name was Johnson, but other sources have stated that this was incorrect and was soon proved to be Amis or Amies. Her parents were supposedly named John and Amy Amis. There are plenty of books out there that claim that they know this information, but on more then several occasions this has been proven to be untrue. Years 1676 - 1682 have been proven to be covered in more depth then any other time in her life. This may be for two reasons: not only was she more productive with her works, but this was a time where she wrote her best comedies within this seven year span.

"Sir Patient Fancy" è una farsa antipuritana che è anche un gustoso esemplare di adattamento della commedia di carattere à la Molière (in questo caso "Il malato immaginario") al contesto culturale e linguistico del teatro della Restaurazione. Questa edizione cerca di avvicinarne lo spirito al pubblico italiano, curando l'ampliamento dell'enciclopedia del lettore attraverso una riflessione sui problemi di interpretazione e di resa inerenti alla traduzione interlinguistica di un testo del Seicento. Aphra Behn
history Aphra Behn July 10 April 16 ) was a prolific dramatist of the Restoration and was one of the first English professional female writers. Her writing participated in the amatory fiction genre of British literature.
Early life
The personal history of Aphra Behn, one of the first Englishwomen credited to earn their livelihood by authorship Summers, Montague . The Works of Aphra Behn. London: William Heineman, 1913 , is unusually interesting but very difficult to unravel and relate. Information regarding her, especially her early life, is scanty, but she was almost certainly born in Wye , near Canterbury , on July 10 to Bartholomew Johnson , a barber, and Elizabeth Denham . Aphra's parents were married in 1638 and Aphra, or Eaffry , was baptized on December 14 . Elizabeth Denham was employed as a nurse to the wealthy Colepeper family, who lived locally, which means that it is likely that Aphra grew up with and spent time with the family's children. The younger child, Thomas Colepeper , later described Aphra as his foster sister.

Born: Circa July 1640 Died: April 16, 1689, in London, England Aphra Behn, a novelist and dramatist, may have been the first woman in England to support herself with her writing. Unlike most work of her day, her plays and books were considered sexually explicit, including themes of love, honor, intrigue, seduction, and betrayal. For her unconventional ways, she was criticized and thought to be unlady-like. There have been several conflicting reports regarding the details and even the main circumstances of her life. One version, popular for a time, has posited that she was born the daughter of a barber. However this has since been effectively disproved, although details of her birth are still unclear. What is fairly consistently stated by biographers is that she traveled to Surinam, South America perhaps in her early twenties. In Surinam, she is believed to have become the mistress of William Scot. In 1658, when Surinam became part of Dutch Guiana, she returned to England and married a Dutch merchant named Behn. In approximately 1666, her husband died during a plague epidemic, leaving no money behind.
