Investigators interviewed him at least ten times, but Lucas consistently denied involvement in Bishop's disappearance. Lucas was convicted of the 1979 murder of an unidentified female in Texas and sentenced to death. The state's former governor, George W. Bush, commuted his sentence to life imprisonment prior to Lucas's scheduled 1999 execution. He later died in prison. Lucas claimed to have killed approximately 600 people, but he confessed to many crimes he did not commit and the exact number of his victims is unknown. Bishop's case remains unsolved.

and held him beside the boat
half out of water, with my hook
fast in a corner of his mouth.
    He didn't fight.
    He hadn't fought at all.
    He hung a grunting weight,
    battered and venerable
    and homely. Here and there
his brown skin hung like strips
like ancient wall-paper, and its pattern of darker brown was like wall-paper: shapes like full-blown roses stained and lost through age. He was speckled with barnacles, fine rosettes of lime, and infested with tiny white sea-lice, and underneath two or three rags of green weed hung down. While his gills were breathing in the terrible oxygen - the frightening gills, fresh and crisp with blood, that can cut so badly - I thought of the coarse white flesh packed in like feathers, the big bones and the little bones, the dramatic reds and blacks of his shiny entrails, and the pink swim-bladder like a big peony.

    Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979)
Born in New England, Bishop's earliest years were marked by the death of her father and her mother's subsequent nervous collapse - by the time Bishop was five her mother was confined to a mental institution. After a peripatetic childhood, spent with various relatives, Bishop attended Vassar College and, through the college's librarian, met Marianne Moore who encouraged and influenced her work. A few years later she was introduced to Robert Lowell who became a lifelong friend. An orphan, lesbian, alcoholic and rootless wanderer, Bishop travelled widely, settling for a number of years in Brazil with the poet Lota de Macedo Soares - who eventually committed suicide. Although her life was difficult, occasionally tragic, Bishop rejected self-pity; displacement and exile may be omnipresent but her poetry is controlled, resonant with the subtleness of the descriptions and in its understatement.

After her father's death and her mother's institutionalization, Elizabeth Bishop lived with her Canadian grandparents in Nova Scotia for a few years, and later with her father's family in Boston, Massachusetts. She attended two different boarding schools, and in 1934 graduated from Vassar College.
