Advertisement George Ayoub is a columnist at The Independent. For those of us who have ever wanted to "just get away for a while," Dotcomguy may be your hero. Then again you may wonder just how happy an e-recluse can be. Dotcomguy has been holed up in a house in Dallas since Jan. 1, unable to leave. But then that's his own choice. He'll be there until Jan. 1, 2001, barring medical emergency. Dotcomguy is conducting a project to show how retailers can best use the Internet. Everything he uses for the next year he must purchase off the Internetfood, clothing, entertainment, books, whatever. Wait! There's more to DCG's little experiment. His house and backyard (where the rules allow him an occasional romp) are outfitted with 16 cameras so visitors to his web site (What else? www.dotcomguy.com) can watch him cook, clean and sleep 24 hours a day. Why someone would want to do that (e-voyeurism?) is not part of DCG's thesis, but suffice to say his tiny little physical world is on display. Of course he also is online quite often and has met fellow surfers from all over the world. He told National Public Radio's Bob Edwards he's already had marriage proposals.

DotComGuy auctions off his trademark name
March 22, 2004 Print this article Email to a friend Mitch Maddox, who legally changed his name to DotComGuy in 1999 and got lots of media attention because of a year-long Internet stunt, is selling his trademark name. "I've taken it as far as I can go," Maddox said on March 16. In 2000, the 30-year-old Dallas native moved into an empty house and survived for a year solely off purchases made on the Internet. Viewers could watch Maddox 24 hours a day via a streaming webcast on his Web site, http://www.dotcomguy.com Maddox began an auction on March 16 for the trademark DotComGuy and the domain name http://www.dotcomguy.com . The auction ends on April 30. "It's an asset I've had lying around, and I think it can really benefit someone else," Maddox said. The market for domain names certainly influenced his decision, Maddox said, pointing to the recent sale of Men.com for $US1.8 million ($2.4 million). Media outlets worldwide covered Maddox's online stunt. The promotion garnered sponsorships from several major companies including UPS and peapod.com, an online grocer.

I really dont know what is going on there, I can understand why they would want to do this, but I cant understand what it proves. Yes we all know that if needs be you could live in your own 4 walls, with nothing but TV and the web as your links to the outside world, but hey, he has so many people come round to either interview him or get in on his piece of the action that the guy is vey rarely on his own anyway ..... Its a good idea, but somehwat like the "Trueman show" really but not as funny.... He is obviously getting paid a load of money for this and I think its mad. ... DotComGuy seeks an end to the Internet life
February 18, 2004
Now he will go back to being just plain Mitch Maddox, legally changing his name back, to the delight of his wife, whom he met where else? on the Internet.
Maddox got worldwide attention in 2000 when he legally changed his name to DotComGuy, in a promotion aimed at demonstrating how the Internet could be used for food, furniture and other necessities.
With sponsors including United Parcel Service, 3Com, Network Solutions, Piper Jaffray and Travelocity, he spent the entire year of 2000 in his home in Dallas Texas, living off the Internet.
All food and other necessities were ordered off the Internet and delivered to the home he never left.
But now, he wants to get his old name back, and is auctioning off the DotComGuy.com domain name.
"From a business perspective, I've taken DotComGuy as far as I can," he told AFP in an e-mail message.

Unfortunately, technical difficulties with the site's Web cam this morning meant that many viewers were unable to see how GMTV's resident Internet expert, Sally Eden, was surviving in the "e-cave". The e-cave, which is, in fact, just a house, is equipped with just the basics a bed, a bathroom and an Internet-ready PC. For everything else food, drink, clothes and entertainment she'll be relying on the Wibbly Wobbly Web. The experiment started today and her progress can be followed

    About this article
Close This article was first published on guardian.co.uk on Tuesday January 02 2001. It was last updated at 11:39 on January 02 2001. The final hours of 2000 brought to a close one of the more bizarre internet experiments - the self-imposed isolation of DotComGuy, a US computer programmer who spent the entire year living off the internet. Supported by corporate sponsors flush with the then-plentiful dot.com cash, Mitch Maddox changed his name legally to DotComGuy before settling in for a year of delivered groceries, chatroom social contact and webcams recording and broadcasting his every move. Dismissed by many as the most absurd stunt in a year awash with publicity stunts, DotComGuy nevertheless managed to attract a number of corporate sponsors, including NetB@nk, PhoneFree.com, Network Solutions and Peapod, the online grocer. Mr Maddox intends to revert back to his given name now that the stunt is over, and will marry a woman he met in an online chat session from his website, DotComGuy.com.
