edit Early life
Liberace, known as “Lee” to his friends and “Walter” to family, was born in West Allis, Wisconsin , near Milwaukee, to Frances Zuchowski, a Polish American , and Salvatore ("Sam") Liberace, an immigrant from Formia Italy He had a twin who died at birth and he was born with a caul , which in his family, as in many societies, was taken as a sign of genius and an exceptional future. Liberace’s father was a musician who played the French horn in bands and movie theaters but sometimes had to work as a factory worker or laborer. While his father encouraged music in the family, his mother was not musical and thought music lessons and a record player to be luxuries they couldn’t afford, causing angry family disputes.

Liberace "People ask how I can play with all those rings, and I reply, 'Very well, thank you'." GHHHHHRRRRRL. Liberace, or Lee to his confidantes, or "Miss Thang" to you and me... desperately felt he needed to keep a tight lid on his homosexuality. He didn't dare risk offending his dear fans in any way. Hello! The clue phone is ringing. He ended up playing a bizarre cat and mouse game with the tabloids for his entire life. He even sued and WON a case when a tabloid implied he was gay. Go figure. The first substantial break for the press was in 1983, when Scott Thorson sued Liberace for support. They were a couple for 5 years. The press coined the term "Galimony" during that trial, which Scott won. Legend has it that Thorson was awarded a penthouse atop an office building at 7461 Beverly Blvd, that Liberace owned. Findadeath.com friend Bob Barnes clarifies that Scott didn't exactly win the suit. It was settled out of court for an estimated $95,000, far less than the millions he was suing for. The palimony part of the suit was dropped at the very beginning because "contracts of a sexual nature" were inadmissible, or some such nonsense. Also, Scott did not win that penthouse in the suit. He was forcibly removed from it the very night that Liberace was performing at the Oscar ceremony. That was the basis for a large portion of the suit against Liberace. Scott was suing to get back his personal property still in Liberace's possession. In fairness, he seemed to deserve some sort of compensation; this guy actually had plastic surgery to look more like Liberace himself. Enter Twilight Zone music…

Liberace was a genteel, half innocent culture whore, gambling the soul of history on the craps table of showbiz, a strange, inbred cross between a historian and a pimp. He worshipped nobility, but did it with only half the cultural education necessary to pull it off. But he had just enough class to fool his audience of middle-class, unquestioning, mostly conservative housewives and their tag-along husbands. Liberace knew enough about Victorian culture to know which goblets he just had to own, but not enough to know that any proper owner of fine cut crystal would never place them on the same table with the world's most gauche sequinned napkin rings. Liberace didn't know when to quit because Liberace didn't know where class began and where gauche left off.

In Vegas, a subtle but telling war bubbles underneath the surface of the collective consciousness - a war that is about deciding who is the true king of Vegas: Elvis or Englebert, Tom Jones or Wayne Newton, Sigfried and Roy or Liberace. Conduct an informal interview of metropolitan cabdrivers and waitreses, and you'll find that most contemporary Las Vegans mysteriously, unaccountably insist that Siegfried and Roy own the crown, always and forever. But these people are thinking only of crowd sizes, not eternal class. Naturally Siegrfied and Roy draw more people because the Vegas of today has more visitors than the Vegas of yesterday. What we need to know in order to understand Vegas and the influence that extravagant showmanship has had on American life is this: Who set the stage for the mass acceptance of outrageous flamboyance that became a defining gesture for our times? In other words, who in Vegas' history best defines

I was lucky enough to see Liberace before he died. The concert was a weird, wild, wonderful spectacle, and it left me awestruck. I couldn't believe that a entire performance (not to mention a several decades long career) could be construed from such unrestrained, indulgent superficiality. The majority of the show consisted of Liberace parading around the stage in outrageous outfits to the "oohs" and "ahhs" of the audience, which was dominated by women over the age of forty. The Days of the Understated Suit Liberace's successful lawsuit against the London tabloid, the Daily Mirror, was a critical moment in his career. It also provides a vivid picture of the closeted world of the 1950s. This excerpt is from Chapter Nine: "You Can Be Sure If It's Westinghouse." The Daily Mirror New York Times headlined its one version of the trial with "Liberace Denies He Is Homosexual." He underestimated his counsel. Indeed, the Fox opened well by linking William Conner's diatribe against the American showman to a pattern of smearing Englishmen: his screed had besmirched even the royal family. Conner's slander of Liberace was only the tip of the iceberg that constituted this venal, reckless journalist, Beyfus proclaimed. He called Conner "a literary assassin who dips his pen in vitriol, hired by this sensational newspaper to murder reputations and hand out sensational articles on which its circulation is built." It was the same charge that John Jacobs had used in suing Hollywood Confidential two years before. Through Liberace, the English court had the chance to redress all these transgressions. "Here's a piano player," Beyfus declaimed, "giving these people a chance to fight back."

B orn Wladsziu Valentino Liberace, Liberace was more show-biz phenomenon than musician. A classical child prodigy, he gained real attention when he started to throw in pop novelties like "Three Little Fishes." Never one to put taste before popularity, by the early 1950s, Liberace was a highly successful performer on stage, radio, and TV. While he did not initially adopt the flamboyant, glittering dress and pageant that later became his trademark, his musical style stayed pretty much the same throughout his career: mostly pop music played with classical flourishes with an occasional popular classic (like "Moonight Sonata") thrown in. Although he had a string of successful albums on Columbia in the early 1950s, he became primarily a performer after appearing as the lead in the film "Sincerely Yours" in 1955. Watching a kinescope of Liberace performing on television in the 1950s, you realize how jaded audiences have become forty years later. Resplendent in white tie and tails, with a beautiful head of wavy hair (the kind the Chordettes asked "Mr. Sandman" to bring their dream guy with) and brilliant white teeth, Liberace simply played and beamed. Once in a while he'd sing, once in a while he'd bring on his brother, George, to play along on violin. But that's all that went on, and people loved it. Down Beat magazine offered this left-handed compliment in 1955: "Let's get one thing straight! Liberace is a skilled artist. But his art is comedy, not music."

THE LIBERACE SHOW U.S. Musical Program Certainly among the most popular early television celebrities and performances, both Liberace the individual and his television program were also among the most persistently derided. Oddly folksy and campy at the same time, Liberace and his show very much defined a certain strata of showmanship in the post-World War II era. Born Wladziu (Walter) Valentino Liberace in suburban Milwaukee, he was interested in music from age four, and won a scholarship to the Wisconsin College of Music when seven, studying there for seventeen years. Reputedly at the advice of family friend and renowned pianist Paderewski, the youngster decided to someday likewise be known by one name. Receiving classical training, he began to perform pop hits in local clubs as a teen. By the early 1940s he was establishing himself in New York night spots: ads offered a phonetic guide for his fans ("Libber-ah-chee"). Playing cocktail lounges and intermissions for big bands, he received a rave Variety notice in 1945 while appearing at the Persian Room, which lead to strings of dates across the United States. He won a small role in the film South Seas Sinner (1950).

Reviving the King of Bling: Liberace
By Ashley Powers Los Angeles Times PREV of NEXT / MCT ISAAC BREKKEN / TPN Lynn Musselman leads a tour at the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas. Museum officials hope all the glitz of Liberace's luxurious lifestyle will draw folks to his story and music. His legacy's caretakers can't stomach the idea of the pianist, who died in 1987, becoming a footnote. But if his devotees have learned anything from a man who branded himself Mr. Showmanship, it's how to fine-tune an image. For the Liberace Foundation's sake, he needs to wow a new audience. "His audience is slowly dying off," says Darin Hollingsworth, executive director of the nonprofit foundation that oversees the museum and has awarded millions of dollars in college arts scholarships. So, look for Liberace in new places. His sequined self is plastered on postcards, bumper stickers, T-shirts, tote bags, wallets and a book of paper cutouts called "Liberace: Your Personal Fashion Consultant" that has sold 10,000 copies. Online, fans can buy Liberace rings, Christmas ornaments, teddy bears, shot glasses, thimbles and even a $1,600 Swarovski crystal miniature grand piano.

page: Mr. Showmanship, the Candelabra Kid, Guru of Glitter, Mr. Smiles, The King of Diamonds, and Mr. Box Office, Wladzui "Walter" Valentino Liberace was for many the epitome of camp, excess, and flamboyance, yet he was also a gay man who steadfastly refused to acknowledge publicly his sexual identity. Born into a musical family on May 16, 1919 in West Allis, Wisconsin, Liberace learned to play the piano by ear at the age of four. As a teenager, he played popular tunes in local Milwaukee movie theaters and nightclubs as Walter Buster Keys. He also continued his classical training, debuting as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony in 1940. Sponsor Message.
After a brief stint with the Works Progress Administration Symphony Orchestra, Liberace attended the Wisconsin College of Music on scholarship. An encore request after a 1939 classical recital altered Liberace's career-path. His performance of the popular tune "Three Little Fishes" in a semi-classical style proved an immediate audience favorite.
