Add Item to My Gallery Empress Mumtaz Mahal has rightly been called the vigor of Shahjahan's life, and the inspiration behind his greatest creation, the Taj Mahal . She is portrayed here in her most usual and widely accepted physiognomy and attire. Opinions vary as to her real likeness in absence of an authentic version of her person. She has, however, invariably been portrayed in her contemporary and subsequent portraits as having an oval face, large forehead, prominent eyes, a well defined neck, thin composed lips, a slanting, sharp nose, a shapely turning chin made out of receding cheeks, long arms terminating in fine long fingers and, above all, her usual semi halo like type crown studded with large rubies, emeralds, diamonds and a few sapphires. A half-sleeved open jacket over her jama and the flower in her hand are other distinguishing features.

Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world, and some Western historians have noted that its architectural beauty has never been surpassed . The Taj is the most beautiful monument built by the Mughals, the Muslim rulers of India. Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble. Its stunning architectural beauty is beyond adequate description, particularly at dawn and sunset. The Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon. On a foggy morning, the visitors experience the Taj as if suspended when viewed from across the Jamuna river.

    On Muslim History and Civilization
Taj Mahal was built by a Muslim, Emperor Shah Jahan (died 1666 C.E.) in the memory of his dear wife and queen Mumtaz Mahal at Agra, India. It is an " elegy in marble " or some say an expression of a "dream." Taj Mahal (meaning Crown Palace) is a Mausoleum that houses the grave of queen Mumtaz Mahal at the lower chamber. The grave of Shah Jahan was added to it later. The queen’s real name was Arjumand Banu . In the tradition of the Mughals, important ladies of the royal family were given another name at their marriage or at some other significant event in their lives, and that new name was commonly used by the public. Shah Jahan's real name was Shahab-ud-din, and he was known as Prince Khurram before ascending to the throne in 1628.

    Our President
    Syed Mumtaz Ali
President, The Canadian Society of Muslims (Dec. 2000) Syed Mumtaz Ali, taking the oath of office over the Qur'an in 1962
The President of the Canadian Society of Muslims recently received (March 2001) two awards for outstanding service to Islam from the Muslim community here in Toronto. They asked for a one-page resume listing his accomplishments which was then published in a booklet that outlined the recipients of the awards and their accomplishments. We thought our readers would like to know a bit about the background of our President, so we have reproduced here the description we gave of his accomplishments to that committee. Syed Mumtaz Ali has a long and impressive resume, but unfortunately we will only be able to mention a few of his most salient accomplishments here. He was educated at several universities. His first university was Osmania in Hyderabad Deccan, India. Back in the days when he attended it, (the 1940s) Osmania was a famous University and was THE University to attend in India. There he studied under such great people as Maulana Manazir Ahsan Gilani and other prominent scholars such as Beoband and Nadwa as well as Dr. M. Hamidullah. He received a BA in theology and also an LL.B. in Muslim Law from Osmania. He had received various scholarships as well in those studies. Some of the subjects he studied were: the Qur'an (exegesis), Hadith, Usul, Fiqh, Kalam, Logic, Arabic, as well as other Arts subjects. Due to the tumultuous conditions from the unfortunate takeover of Hyderabad by India, and under self-imposed exile, he travelled to Pakistan where he practised law as an Advocate for five years. Then he travelled to London, England where he studied at the University of London. There he completed the courses for an LL.M. in Muslim Law and also courses as a Chartered Secretary.

    15. Mumtaz Mahal
Since the dawn of independence in 1948, mumtaz Mahal has gained eminence as the official residence of the Speakers of Sri Lanka s Parliament.
    http://www.rootsweb.com/~lkawgw/mumtaz.html
A Mansion called Mumtaz reported in the Sunday Times of Ceylon Nov 7, 1993 under the section titled "Stately Homes" by Raine Wickramatunga and Renuka Sadananden Since the dawn of independence in 1948, Mumtaz Mahal has gained eminence as the official residence of the Speakers of Sri Lanka's Parliament. A tradition that began with the colorful figure of Sir Francis Molamure, the first Speaker of Independent Ceylon, is carried on today by present Speaker MH Mohamed, who, interestingly is a kinsman of the man who built this splendid dwelling by the sea. Having been built in an era when colonial influence was strong economically, culturally, and politically, it comes as no surprise that Mumtaz Mahal, like many other mansions of the day, bore the stamp of British architecture. It was one Mohamed Ali Mohamed Hussain, a wealthy Muslim gentleman, who commissioned a promising young architect, Homi Billimoria, to create the elegant home he envisioned. Blending the luxurious lines of a Mediterranean villa with classic British, Billimoria completed the task and the mansion was later embellished with fine furniture created by French nobleman, Count De Mauny . The Count, who at that time had purchased an island off Weligama Bay, gained a reputation in Ceylon as a fine landscape artist, and Mohamed Hussain, recognizing his skills engaged him to lay out the lawns and sunken gardens of Mumtaz Mahal.
