Because of the close relationship between biochemistry and medicine, I have included in this glossary a collection of prefixes, suffixes and root words typically found in medical dictionaries in hopes that some words I may have forgotten to define can be figured out. These are in bold, with prefixes and suffixes followed or preceded by a hyphen, respectively. Roots have no hyphens. I have left words as lower case except in those cases where capitalization is necessary (named pathways for example).Glossary A B C D E ... Z ab-

http://www.its.caltech.edu/~biochem/
Biochemistry has been established as an interdisciplinary program at the interface of biology and chemistry that seeks to understand the chemistry of life. Thus, biochemists study the atomic structure and folding of biopolymers; their interactions with each other and with small molecules; and the roles of particular biopolymers and biopolymer assemblies in cellular physiology.
The basic building block of life is the cell; the intellectual focus of modern biochemistry is to understand how individualparts interact to give cells their wide spectrum of functions. In particular, biochemistry addresses the principles through which the individual components of cells combine in an orderly self-association to produce cell form, function, and dynamic behavior.

Hot Off the Presses: Check out BMB's recent publications BMB Majors: Click to find out about INTERNSHIPS AND OTHER SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR UNDERGRADS Did you know there are AWARDS FOR BIOCHEM MAJORS? BMB Seniors You should check your degree progress report on Spire to see if there are any "mistakes" and anything marked in RED that will NOT be satisfied by the courses you are taking this semester Spring 2008. If you find problems you need to contact Dr. Fitzgerald-Hayes by email (mollyfh@biochem.umass.edu) with a specific explanation of what you think is wrong. Note: if you are in Biochem 590A, we have sent the request to have this course satisfy the Biochem 526 requirement, but it may take a week or more to show up. If your graduation date is Spring 2008, but you know you will not be finished with your requirements, you should go to the Registrar's Office in Whitmore and change your graduation date. If you don't do this, you will not be able to register for classes for Fall 2008. Questions? E-mail Carol Ryan at ryan@biochem.umass.edu; or come by the office, 913G LGRT during normal business hours.

Welcome to our website. The Department of Biochemistry is a vigorous group of scientists and trainees dedicated to the expansion and transmission of knowledge about the biological world. Our particular focus is the characterization of macromolecules and biological processes at the molecular level. Research groups in the department address the structure of biological macromolecules, the mechanisms by which they function, and the possible applications to research technology and to medicine. The relatively small size of our department provides an atmosphere of collegiality and accessibility. At the same time, close contacts and collaborations with other very strong departments on campus provide a breadth of expertise and experience of which we take full advantage. In addition to their research, our faculty teach both graduate and medical students. At present we have about 48 graduate students and 20 postdoctoral fellows distributed among 11 laboratories. Our research trainees receive a solid grounding in the fundamentals of biology and biochemistry and experience with contemporary approaches to problems of significant current interest. Graduates of our program have had good success in finding outstanding opportunities for additional training and/or professional development. Those interested in pursuing doctoral studies in biochemistry should apply directly to one of two interdepartmental programs:

Why biochemistry?
Biochemistry seeks to understand and explain living systems at the molecular level. It is a scientific discipline that finds applications across the biomedical and biological sciences and underpins the biotechnology revolution. Its rapid rate of development is amazing, making it an exciting and challenging subject to study. Biochemists try to answer questions that are fundamental to life. What are the molecules that constitute living organisms? How are they made and how is their synthesis regulated? How are they organised into cells and how do cells assemble to create whole organisms? What is the molecular basis of such processes as genetic inheritance, evolution, the immunological recognition of invading micro-organisms and the astonishing powers of the mammalian brain? What goes wrong to cause human diseases such as cancer, strokes, heart attacks and mental illness? How can such errors be corrected? This knowledge finds practical application in medicine, agriculture, brewing and biotechnology. Biochemists devise new ways of diagnosing and treating human, animal and plant diseases; identify new targets for the pharmaceutical industry; and design new biotechnological treatments and processes. A degree in biochemistry is one of the best preparations for a scientific career in these fields.

The Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (MPIB) is part of the Max Planck Society, a non profit research organization dedicated to top level basic research. The MPIB, which currently has 10 departments and 15 independent junior research groups, is one of the largest Institutes within the Max Planck Society's biomedical section. While its size enables the Institute to maintain a variety of methods, it also provides a basis for developing a research focus with close collaboration among the departments. The research focus of the institute might best be described as the examination of the structure, function and interaction of biological macromolecules (especially proteins), commencing with a single molecule, progressing to the cell and the organism as a whole.
