For admission enquiries, please contact E-mail: admission@aus.edu Welcome to the Department of Chemical Engineering at the American University of Sharjah The Chemical Engineering program offers a four-year program of study leading to a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering that prepares graduates to work in all areas of the chemical industry. Chemical engineers combine mathematics and advanced chemistry with engineering principles to design, develop and operate industrial processes for the manufacture of a host of products including baked goods, beverages, medicine, cosmetics, gasoline, heating oil, plastics, synthetic fibers, paint, solvents and chemical intermediates. A chemical engineer's education permits the graduate to work in design and automation, computer simulation, specialty chemicals, industrial gases, food processing, petroleum fractionation, polymers, pollution prevention and remediation, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, or pulp and paper industries. The expertise of chemical engineers is also used in fields such as law and medicine.

Chemical engineering has made significant contributions to a diverse range of scientific and technological developments such as drug delivery devices, microfluidic devices, environmental remediation, fuel cells, semiconductor processing, and enzyme design using biomimetics. The far-reaching impact of chemical engineering can be attributed to its focus on basic principles from physics, chemistry, and biology and its systematic approach to problem solving and analysis.

    A Churchill Perspective
Markus Kraft is a Fellow of Churchill and our Director of Studies in Chemical Engineering. He is a University Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering. You can find out more about Markus from his personal homepage at http://www.cheng.cam.ac.uk/~mkraft/ If Sir Winston Churchill's mission for his College was to "educate advanced technologists", Chemical Engineers were the kind of people he had in mind. There are two routes into Chemical Engineering (each with its own UCAS code), either via Engineering or Natural Sciences . You will spend your first year studying either Engineering or Natural Sciences and will become a member of the Chemical Engineering department from your second year onwards. Entry requirements are essentially the same as for the course in which you spend your first year; applicants are advised to refer to those sections of this guide. A Chemical Engineer is required to devise, design, combine and operate industrial processes to produce chemicals, oil and foodstuffs economically. To this end, the latter part of the course is concerned with the application of a grounding in science and general engineering to problems of industrial interest and to the development of the subject

What is Chemical Engineering
Chemical Engineering applies both the principles from chemistry and engineering. Chemical engineers use the concepts from the scientific principles of chemistry and some engineering concepts including limited resources, safety issues and cost factors. This knowledge also overlaps many other fields including, physics, mathematics, and mechanical and electrical engineering. Chemical engineers design equipment and develop processes for chemical manufacturing. They also work on a variety of projects in healthcare, biotechnology, and business services industries.
Chemical Engineering Jobs
Chemical engineering jobs can work in between scientists and engineers, bridging the gap to help scientists and engineers accomplish their set goals.
Project Engineer – Chemical
  • Project Engineer will work on related projects for the organization including for Chemical facilities or manufacturing

  • Manufacturing Manager
  • This position would probably report to the Plant Manager. The manufacturing manager will support the Production Team and ensure adherence to safe practices, Teamwork, Continuous Process Improvements and Cost-Reduction. Will also monitor and troubleshoot the processes and equipment

Chemical Engineering Mission Statement. The mission of the Department of Chemical Engineering is to provide a broadbased education in chemical engineering
    http://www.cte.uiuc.edu/assessment/plans/chemical_engineering.htm
Chemical Engineering Mission Statement The mission of the Department of Chemical Engineering is to provide a broad-based education in chemical engineering and related fields for highly qualified undergraduates; to accomplish, in conjunction with a program of graduate education, research recognized by peers as among the most significant in the world; and to serve society through chemical engineering leadership in matters of national policy, education, standards, and professionalism. Why create an assessment plan? In 1997 the UIUC Provost charged each campus unit with developing and implementing a plan for assessing training outcomes for their undergraduate and graduate majors by March 30, 1999. Each plan must be approved by the Provost and will be an important component of the next North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation review of UIUC. Details about the unit assessment plans, guidelines for their development, and information about how this information will be used by the campus can be found at the UIUC Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) web page. The undergraduate program of the Department of Chemical Engineering is also due, in 2001, for accreditation by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, ABET under the new outcome assessment based criteria referred to as "Criteria 2000".

What can this course offer me?
    School Web pages:
Course content: All students on this programme take the common Stages 1 and 2. At the end of Stage 2 you may choose to spend a paid year in industry before continuing with Stage 3. If you pass your Stage 2 examinations with Merit, you may transfer to the MEng for the final two years of that degree. In Stage 3 you take modules covering various aspects of chemical engineering, including a plant design, which draws together all your previous theoretical and practical knowledge, and counts for about a third of your study time.
Is this the right course for me?
