All information and binaries for the RISC OS port of cvs (command line and GUI).

RISC OS CVS port
Latest news...
  • CVS command line port v0.26 based on the official CVS 1.12.9 release is released on 23 Oct 2004.
  • The CVS GUI front end (32-bit/26-bit compatible) v0.19 is released on 27 Nov 2004.
What ?
CVS stands for "Concurrent Versions System" and is a version control system. Using it, you can record the history of your source files (e.g. source code of your programs, contents of your web site). This distribution has two parts : the first one consists of the command line based CVS program (!CVS.Bin.cvs) which is more or less a straight port from the original CVS sources. The second part is a GUI program allowing you to use the command line based CVS program in a more user friendly way. The documentation supplied does not explain how to use CVS nor what each individual CVS command does. For this information I would like to refer to :
  • The complete book "Open Source Development with CVS, Third Edition" (ISBN 1-92311-181-6) has been released under the GPL. You can get it here . Recommended reading !
  • The official CVS web pages containing the latest information about CVS and also the latest version of the CVS sources.

Joey shows you how to keep track of everything with CVS. digg_url = 'http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/5976'; digg_title = "CVS homedir"; digg_bodytext = ""; digg_skin = 'standard'; I keep my life in a CVS repository. For the past two years, every file I've created and worked on, every e-mail I've sent or received and every config file I've tweaked have all been checked into my CVS archive. When I tell people about this, they invariably respond, “You're crazy!” After all, CVS is meant for managing discrete bodies of code, such as free software programs that are worked on and available to a lot of people or in-house projects that are collaboratively developed by several employees. CVS has a reputation of being a pain to deal with, and it has a lot of crufty bits that regularly drive users up the wall, like its mistreatment of directories. Why inflict the pain of CVS on yourself if you don't have to? Why do it on such a scale that it affects nearly everything you do with your computer?

CVS for Administrators
From MoodleDocs
The CVS archive contains all the source code for Moodle. You can use a CVS program to extract versions ranging from the most stable release to the most cutting-edge development version. CVS can be an extremely convenient way of maintaining a Moodle server. Developers may have selective write access to the Moodle CVS archive (see CVS for Developers for details about how to do this). However, most people only need read-only access, so they can just connect to one of the mirrors using anonymous CVS as described below. There can however currently be a delay of up to 1 hour between the time a developer commits changes to developer CVS and the time it becomes available on anonymous CVS.

52. Home Of Meta-CVS
Version control system with directory structure versioning and more.
http://users.footprints.net/~kaz/mcvs.html
Meta-CVS is a version control system built around CVS. Although it retains most of the features of CVS, including all of the networking support, it is more capable than CVS, and easier to use. Its main features are:
  • Directory structure versioning. Under Meta-CVS, the directory structure of a project is versioned in the same way as the contents of its files. Concurrent changes to the directory structure are permitted. It can be branched, and merged. The program dynamically rearranges the structure of the sandbox as you obtain updates from the repository, switch branches or retrieve old revisions.
  • User-friendly file type handling. Meta-CVS interactively handles file types when files are imported or added. It remembers, for instance, that .png files are considered binary so that when new instances of them are added, they are automatically treated as binary.
  • Sane corner cases. Meta-CVS handles the use case when two or more developers add a file of the same name to the same location. It handles the case when someone removes a file that someone else is modifying. It handles the case of files being removed and later added with a different keyword expansion mode. It handles names containing spaces. All of these cause problems in CVS, but not in Meta-CVS, because Meta-CVS simply avoids feeding CVS the patterns of use and troublesome inputs that tickle the CVS bugs.
  • Simple branching and merging.

CVS (Concurrent Versions System) is a utility used to keep several versions of a set of files, and to allow several developers to work on a project together. It allows developers to see who is editing files, what changes they made to them, and when and why that happened. Many programming projects (both open-source and proprietary) use CVS nowadays. Ever wonder why there seem to be directories called 'CVS' in a source package you just downloaded? That's the developer who packaged it being lazy :) Ever see one of these :

About:
CVS is a version control system, which allows you to keep old versions of files (usually source code), keep a log of who, when, and why changes occurred, etc., like RCS or SCCS. Unlike the simpler systems, CVS does not just operate on one file at a time or one directory at a time, but operates on hierarchical collections of directories consisting of version controlled files. CVS helps to manage releases and to control the concurrent editing of source files among multiple authors. CVS allows triggers to enable/log/control various operations and works well over a wide area network. Author:
