He was largely self-taught, and noted for his vast musical output, which includes 32 symphonies . Brian grew up in a working-class community in the pottery-producing region of the north Midlands, with little opportunity for a musical education. Despite this, he composed throughout his life, although very little of the huge amount of music he produced was performed during his lifetime. He began by working in a clerical post in the timber industry but for a while, with the support of an anonymous patron, was able to devote his time to composition. However, his career as a composer was disrupted by World War I: discharged from the army due to injury, he took various clerical posts, and acted as a music copyist, critic, and editor, most notably as assistant editor for the journal Musical Opinion from 1920.
