Encyclopedia Article Find in this article View printer-friendly page E-mail Multimedia 1 item Cavalli, Pier Francesco (1602-1676), the leading Italian opera composer of the generation after Monteverdi . Born in Crema, he was a choirboy at St Mark’s Cathedral in Venice under Monteverdi’s direction; he later became a tenor and second organist there. He may have studied with Monteverdi, and certainly worked closely with him. From 1639, he composed numerous operas for the burgeoning public opera houses of Venice . His growing fame, and the rapid spread of interest in opera, led to productions of his works in many Italian cities, commissions for new operas for Milan and Naples, and, in 1660, an invitation to write Ercole Amante for the wedding of King Louis XIV in Paris—although this was not well received. Articolo Trova nell'articolo Anteprima di stampa Invia Cavalli, Pier Francesco (Crema 1602 - Venezia 1676), compositore italiano. Trasferitosi a Venezia, centro operistico e musicale pi¹ importante in Italia nei primi anni del Seicento, divenne cantore, nella qualit  di tenore, della cappella di San Marco mentre ne era maestro Monteverdi . Cambi² il proprio nome da Caletti Bruni in Cavalli, in omaggio al suo mecenate Federigo Cavalli. Divenne secondo organista della cappella nel 1640, primo organista nel 1665 e maestro di cappella nel 1668. Fu autore di musiche sacre come messe , salmi e inni in stile concertato, tipico della chiesa di San Marco. La sua fama ¨ giunta per² sino a oggi grazie all’impronta lasciata nel repertorio operistico veneziano con una quarantina di melodrammi, tra cui Le nozze di Peleo e di Teti opera con cui esord¬ nel teatro pubblico di San Cassiano
