Resources John Field Cherokee Freedman Right at the close of the Civil War, after the colored folks were freed, the rebels came in and killed a lot of the colored folks, and took a lot of them south. The slaves were all trying to get away. They were aiming to go to Neosho, Missouri. From what John Field's mother had told him, while she was alive, the old cabin where the slave uprising took pace, was one-fourth of a mile southeast of the Murrell house, instead of due south, according to Ed Hicks. It was such a little to the east, generally speaking, you would say south of the old place. According to Field a large number of slaves were living on the Ross place. This unusually short interview with John Field was made in 1936. Exactly why he was selected as a subject is not know as he was not born a slave, but was in fact born just after the war. However, his parents were slaves and this incomplete interview does make a reference to the chaos after the war. The interview was clearly incomplete, but is included since he was a descendant of Cherokee slaves. It is written for some reason in the third person with the interviewer speaking. Contributed by M. Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z John Field Biography John Field (July 26, 1782 - January 23, 1837) was an Irish composer and pianist. He is best known for being the first composer to write nocturnes. Born in Dublin, Field first studied the piano under his father, who was a violinist, and later under Tommaso Giordani. He later went went to London where he studied under Muzio Clementi. He toured Europe both to demonstrate the pianos that Clementi made and as a concert pianist before settling in St Petersburg in Russia where he was a popular performer and teacher. He died in Moscow. Field is best remembered as the first composer to write nocturnes, single movement pieces for piano which were not in a fixed form (as the minuet or fugue are) and which maintained a single mood throughout. These pieces greatly influenced Frederic Chopin, who went on to write 21 nocturnes himself. Inasmuch as Field's nocturnes were the first single-movement piano character pieces, they can be seen as important forerunners of many other Romantic composers' works, among them Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt and Edvard Grieg. Field also wrote seven piano concertos of which the best known is probably the second (1811).

In 1802 Clementi took his former pupil on a joint European tour, but Clementi kept all the fees himself, refusing to grant Field any of the credit for their success. Field only achieved independence and fame when, after a series of performances with Clementi in Russia in 1803, he elected to stay on after Clementi left. He became the artistic idol of St Petersburg and Moscow society, famed—in a time of barnstorming virtuosi—for his delicate, “singing” piano sound, without a hint of showmanship for its own sake. A stream of rich pupils made him a fortune, but Field developed a serious drink problem, which eventually caused the breakdown in his relationships with both his wife and his mistress, by each of whom he had a son. After 1823, Field was often too drunk to perform in public, though his reputation ensured that he could tour to London, Paris, Switzerland, and Italy as late as the 1830s. He became ill while on tour in Naples, and died just over a year after his enforced return to Moscow.

Field was a clammer by occupation. While working with his boat fifteen years ago he received an injury that bruised one side of his left arm from the shoulder to the elbow. For a year and a half he was under the treatment of doctors, but his arm would not heal. The bruised part of the arm remained raw and Dr. Welch, who was then located at Keyport, said that the only thing that would save the arm from being amputated would be the grafting on of new skin. Consent was gained from a number of Keansburg children to take a small piece of skin from their arms. This skin was grafted by Dr. Welch on the injured part of Field’s arm. The operation was successful and in a short time afterward Field was able to resume work. Field was 38 years old. He was born at Norfolk, Virginia, and came to Keansburg about twenty years ago. Soon after coming to Keansburg he married Miss Evalma Covert, daughter of the late Johnston Covert. She and four children survive him. He leaves also a brother and a sister in the South. He was a member of the American Mechanics lodge of Keyport and Mrs. Field will receive $270 from that order. She will also receive $30 from the Prudential Insurance company. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon at the Keansburg Methodist church. Rev. John Allen conducted the service. The body was buried in Truex’s burying ground at Keansburg. The pall bearers were Stephen Seeley, Joseph VanBrunt, Albert Morris, Frank Seeley, Charles Salmon and Wyman Birkbeck.
