Inicio Buscador Las figuras clave de la historia Reportajes Los protagonistas de la actualidad Umberto Giordano (Foggia, 1867 - Milán, 1948) Compositor de óperas italiano. Estudió, a pesar de la oposición paterna, en el Conservatorio de Nápoles entre 1882 y 1889, época en la que escribió su primera ópera, Marina , obra que presentó a un concurso y a partir del cual se le encargó la composición de su siguiente trabajo, Mala vita, que se estrenó en Roma en 1892. En 1894 empezó la composición de su ópera más conocida, Andrea Chénier , basada en la vida de este poeta revolucionario francés. El libreto fue escrito por Luigi Illica para Alberto Franchetti, el cual a su vez le dio el libreto a Giordano. Esta ópera fue estrenada en La Scala el 28 de marzo de 1896, y fue representada por toda Europa y Nueva York en los años siguientes. Andrea Chénier sigue siendo la ópera más conocida de Giordano, hasta el punto de que a este autor se le recuerda por esta composición, que ha permanecido como una de las más bellas muestras del verismo italiano, estilo al que estaba adscrito. Este estilo operístico floreció en Italia en la última década del siglo XIX y se caracterizó por tener un argumento melodramático y a menudo violento, con personajes extraídos de la realidad cotidiana. La estrategia musical incluía la declamación apasionada de los solos, y las armonías y melodías emocionalmente recargadas. Le prime due opere Mala Vita (1892) e Regina Diaz (1894), ebbero alterna fortuna: accolte con riserve dalla critica, furono in parte apprezzate a Vienna e a Berlino, ma caddero miseramente a Napoli. Licenziato dal proprio editore e in serie difficolt  economiche, fu aiutato dal compositore Alberto Franchetti che gli cedette il libretto di Andrea Ch©nier , scritto originariamente per lui. L'opera fu rappresentata al Teatro alla Scala di Milano nel 1896 e riscosse un successo al di l  di ogni previsione, facendo di Giordano un autore acclamato in Italia e all'estero. Seguirono Fedora Siberia La cena delle beffe (1924) e Il Re (1929). Negli ultimi anni la sua produzione and² diradandosi, in concomitanza con l'esaurirsi delle motivazioni poetiche e musicali della scuola verista, cui Giordano apparteneva. Il suo primo dramma
