It is about a woman called Hildegard von Bingen.
She existed during the times of the old monks.
Can someone tell me why she was important?

    Hildegard of Bingen
Hildegard was the tenth child of a noble family in the courts of Sponheim. She was sent to be a nun with a very popular nun named Jutta. It was at the monastery where Hildegard found a strange ability to see visions. She interpreted those visions as sent from the Heavens. She was instructed by God to write the things she saw. Hildegard produced several books based on the visions. The book in which you read an excerpt from was one of the writings which was not describing and interpreting her visions which makes it unusual from her normal compositions.

The primary source was the inspiration of my episode. I was able to see an actual printed copy of the medical treatise and it interested me very much. Also the position that Hildegard was in as a woman was also very interesting to me. I used a quote from the primary source.
I used several secondary sources to get information about Hildegard. My secondary source authors are accredited historian and published books on the subject although they were not published in a science magazine. I also used the online encyclopedia wikipedia for some of the background information on Hildegard.

Hildegard of Bingen, 1098-1179 : A Visionary Life by Sabina Flanagan Drawing on contemporary sources, the text unfolds Hildegard's life from the time of her entrance into an anchoress's cell to her death as a famed visionary and writer, abbess and confidante of popes and kings, more than seventy years later. Against this background the author explores Hildegard's vast creative work, encompassing theology, medicine, natural history, poetry, and music. This new edition includes: a new preface, additions to the biographical sections which reveal new discoveries about Hildegard's life, updated references to the latest critical material on Hildegard's writings, and a new bibliography and discography. It is the great virtue of Sabina Flanagan's cool, scholarly, and reflective biography that it sets her story so firmly in her own age....A woman of electrifying visionary power, fascinating, often enigmatic and clearly of great presence, she was also a woman with a will and prejudices of her own....It is as such, wrinkles and all, that Sabina Flanagan presents her to us, and we must be grateful for the historical balance of her picture."

    Biography
A vita of Hildegard was written by two monks, Godefrid and Theodoric (PL vol. 197). Hildegard was born into a family of nobles in the service of the counts of Sponheim, close relatives of the Hohenstaufen emperors. Because she was a tenth child, and a sickly one from birth, and also perhaps as a political move, at the age of eight Hildegard's parents sent her as a tithe to the church. Hildegard was put in the care of Jutta, the sister of Count Meinhard of Sponheim, just outside the Disibodenberg monastery in Germany. Jutta was enormously popular and acquired so many followers a small nunnery sprang up around her. Upon Jutta's death in 1136 Hildegard was chosen magistra of the community, and eventually moved the group to a new monastery on the Rupertsberg at Bingen on the Rhine. From the time she was very young, Hildegard claimed to have visions. She received a prophetic call from God five years after her election as magistra in 1141 demanding of her, "Write what you see". At first she was hesitant about writing her visions, holding them inside. She was finally convinced to write by members of her order after falling physically ill from carrying the unspoken burden.
