Born in Vienna, Straus showed distinct musical talents by the age of 10. He studied composition and orchestration under the guidance of Max Bruch in Berlin. His first works included lieder chamber music , an overture to the play Der Traum ein Leben by Franz Grillparzer and an opera, The Sage of Cordoba . The conductor Johann Strauss advised him to learn the practical side of his craft by becoming a theatre conductor; Straus conducted orchestras in Br¼nn, Mainz, and Hamburg during the following years. In 1900 Ernst von Wolzogen started his cabaret , the œberbrettl, in Berlin, and Straus became his pianist and chief composer. During his career he wrote some 500 cabaret songs, including “The Merry Husband” and “The Music Comes”, which made him a European celebrity. Straus then returned to writing for the stage, producing

Oscar Straus (eigtl. Oscar Nathan Strauss)
