He was born in Oslo, and began studying the violin at an early age, playing in orchestras in his home town, and conducting for the first time in Bergen in 1860. He began travelling through Germany hoping to build up his career as a virtuoso violinist, but in 1863 he entered the Leipzig Conservatory to study composition. He quickly made an impression with a symphony, a string quartet, and a string octet, and in the later 1860s added a violin concerto and a cello concerto to his list of works. In 1872, having returned to Oslo to conduct, he established a reputation as a brilliant orchestral trainer, raising standards in every ensemble he directed.
