Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky
The Young Tchaikovsky
Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky was born in Russia in 1840. He loved and created great music all his life. Peter once said, "I started to compose as soon as I knew what music was." That's true. Tchaikovsky was just four years old when he composed a song about his mother. His two-year-old sister, Alexandra, helped him. When Peter was 10 his marks at school were terrific. To celebrate, his mother took him to see an opera . It was written by Glinka, a man known as "the father of Russian Music". Glinka became one of Tchaikovsky's heroes. Music was a big part of Peter Tchaikovsky's schoolwork. His class often went to plays and operas together. He sang in the school choir and took piano lessons.

Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky
Perhaps the best Russian composer of all time, Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky was a genius for creating melodies, mastering musical structure, and highly developing the sense of musical drama. Born in Votkinsk, in the Ural Mountains of European Russia, his father was a government inspector of mines. Even when Peter started the piano at the age of seven, through until he was nineteen, he never showed any signs of musical talent. But when he was nineteen, Tchaikovsky realized that he really wanted to be a musician. Continuing his job as a clerk in the Ministry of Justice, he began to study theory and compose. When the great Nicholas Rubinstein founded the Moscow Conservatory, he realized that he needed talented musicians to teach as professor, therefore hiring Tchaikovsky. He was a very talented composer, no doubt, but most of the other professors believed he was too young to be an actual skilled professor. For twelve years Tchaikovsky held the position, and even wrote a book on harmony to prove he was a true professor of music. Not all of Russia was convinced that Tchaikovsky, however. The critics and other composers such as Berlioz and Liszt saw him as a lucky wanna-be, and sniped at him and his works. Strenuous work and pressure as a composer, critic, and teacher brought Tchaikovsky brought him to a state of nervous collapse. Fortunately, a music lover and wealthy widow who singled out young, talented composers helped Tchaikovsky out, paid him for thirteen, feeling pity and sorrow for the young man.

In the huge literary heritage of the composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - which includes articles on music and musical criticism, a vast amount of correspondence and detailed diary entries - the ballet theme occupies a rather modest place compared to, for example, opera.

Tchaikovsky: ``Nutcracker'' Suite
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, 1840-1893. Suite from the ballet The Nutcracker , Op. 71a. Completed 1892, first performance March 19, in St. Petersburg. Scored for 3 flutes (3rd doubling piccolo, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, bass trombone, tuba, cymbals, triangle, tambourine, glockenspiel, tympani, harp, celesta, and strings. It may come as a surprise to many to learn that Pyotr (Peter) Tchaikovsky, one of the best-loved composers of all time, began his adult life in one of the least glamorous occupations known to man: government clerk. History has not recorded his exact assignments, however, for the man was so indifferent to his job that he later forgot exactly what it was that he had done! The young official had continued his youthful interest in music, but declared at the age of 21 that ``even if I actually had any talent, it can hardly be developed now.'' It is indeed fortunate for posterity that he turned out to be wrong! Only a year after he wrote these words, he became disillusioned by an ``unjust'' promotion over his head and entered the new Conservatory of the Russian Society of Music. Some thirty years later, in December of 1891, the now-successful composer's new opera

Peotr As A Child Peotr Ilich Tchaikovsky was born May 7, 1840 in Votkinsk, Russia. He started taking piano lessons at age 5, but he was not encouraged to apply his natural musical talent as a child. It wasn't until he was 21 that he started studying music seriously. Two years later he quit his job as a clerk in the ministry of justice to pursue a full time musical career. Tchaikovsky was a musical genius, a national hero, and a known homosexual.
The Marriage of Tchaikovsky
Throughout his life Tchaikovsky tried to conceal his homosexuality, although it was one of the world's worst kept secrets. "I am aware that my inclinations are the greatest and most unconquerable obstacle to happiness; I must fight my nature with all of my strength. I shall do everything possible to marry this year."
Tchaikovsky letter to his brother. In an attempt to conceal and repress his homosexuality, Tchaikovsky married Antonina Milyukova in 1877. The wedding was immediately followed by a failed attempt at suicide. He walked into the Moska River in hope of contracting pneumonia. The marriage ended within a year.
The True Loves of Tchaikovsky
The survival of the brilliant composer is credited to the financial support of Nadezhda von Meck. Mme. von Meck never met Tchaikovsky but was so impressed by his work that she supported him for 12 years. Without explanation, the support was withdrawn by the wealthy, eccentric widow in 1890.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Biography
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Russian , sometimes transliterated as Piotr , Anglicised as Peter Ilich N.S. ); April 25, O.S. )) was a Russian composer of the Romantic era. Although not a member of the group of nationalistic composers usually known in English -speaking countries as The Five , his music has come to be known and loved for its distinctly Russian character as well as its rich harmonies and stirring melodies. His works, however, were much more western than his Russian contemporaries as he effectively used both nationalistic folk melodies and international elements. Contents 1 Biography
