The march was composed for the coronation of Tsar Alexander III.
The anthem appears twice in the second half of the march. In the Soviet version both fragments of the music were cut from the score, which in my opinion changed the finale part of the march significantly.
The Danish royal anthem is also present in the march, appearing on the second minute.

    Eugene Onegin
An Opera by Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky
    (or Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky)
This opera, by Russia’s greatest composer, the writer of the famous "Pathétique" symphony, has been staged several times in recent years, and may yet have a larger place in the repertoire. The libretto, based on a story in verse by Pushkin, is unfortunately disconnected and lacking in incident.
Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky (whose surname is sometimes spelt as as Tschaikowsky) was born in Russia in 1840, and died (of cholera) at St. Petersburg in 1893. He studied law; entered the Government service; became a pupil of the Petersburg Conservatoire; and in 1866 teacher of harmony there, a post which he held till 1877. After that, he devoted his whole attention to composition, latterly with a pension from the Czar. There was a good deal of romantic mystery about his life and career, particularly about his marriage. The honorary degree of Doctor of Music was conferred on him by Cambridge University in 1893.

Gay Love-Letters from Tchaikovsky to his Nephew Bob Davidov
Gay men have taken to their hearts the music of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-93) because it is perceived (rightly or wrongly) to contain all the longing and despair of homosexual angst in a homophobic world. Although he was one of the great musical thinkers, it is for the melodic lyricism and suffering so audible in his work, rather than its complexity or brilliance, that he will be remembered. Tchaikovsky's homosexuality was denied by Soviet musicologists until fairly recently, and much material still remains to be retrieved from Russian archives and published in English. His lovers included Alexey Apukhtin in his music student days 1867-70; Vladimir Shilovsky, a wealthy young lad whom he also met at the Moscow Conservatory, during 1868-72, and who financed several trips for the two of them; Alexei Sofronov his valet from 1872 to the end of his life; his pupil Eduard Zak, who killed himself in 1873 (he inspired the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture ); Joseph Kotek in the mid-1870s; his nephew Vladimir Davidov (second son of his sister Alexandra) in the 1880s-1890s, to whom he dedicated the

    Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893)
    Background

Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky was born on 7th May, 1840, at Votkinsk, Russia, to a wealthy but unmusical family. His father was a government mining official in St Petersburg, and he was the second of five children. He was sent to law school, and at age 19 gained a position in the Ministry of Justice in St Petersburg.  His heart, however, was set on music, and from an early age he displayed great musical talent, especially through his improvisations on the piano.
    Start of a musical career
Tchaikovsky was studying part time at the St Petersburg Conservatoire, then directed by Anton Rubinstein, and later gave up law to study full time. Rubinstein gave him his first composition lessons, and he also took lessons in harmony and flute.  His Characteristic Dances were performed in 1865, and he made his first appearance as a conductor in a performance of his Overture in F.  In the same year, he was appointed professor of harmony at the new Moscow Conservatoire, eleven years after his mother died of cholera.

    Introduction
Print this section Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), Russian composer, the foremost of the 19th century. Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, in the western Ural area of the country. He studied law in Saint Petersburg and took music classes at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. There his teachers included Russian composer and pianist Anton Rubinstein , from whom Tchaikovsky subsequently took advanced instruction in orchestration. In 1866 composer-pianist Nicholas Rubinstein, Anton's brother, obtained for Tchaikovsky the post of teacher of harmony at the Moscow Conservatory. There the young composer met dramatist

Filed under: Biography Features Music Books Tchaikovsky: The Quest for the Inner Man
Alexander Poznansky Lewis Owens More than a hundred years after his death, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky remains a greatly loved but still deeply enigmatic figure. However, in his comprehensive and illuminating biography Tchaikovsky: The Quest for the Inner Man, Alexander Poznansky has brilliantly employed the personal correspondence and documentation that has escaped Soviet censorship to dispel many of the myths still fashionably surrounding the composer’s life and death. One is reminded here of Tchaikovsky’s great compatriot and contemporary, Leo Tolstoy, himself an admirer of the composer. In his Confession , begun a year after the completion of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, Tolstoy also saw the only way to emerge out of the dark well of despair was to return to the simplicity of life provided by others. For Tolstoy as well as Tchaikovsky, this provided the hope that enabled life to continue. Indeed, shortly before the composition of the Fourth Symphony, Tolstoy had presented Tchaikovsky with his book The Cossacks in appreciation of the composer’s music.

Although he began piano instruction at the age of five and showed signs of musical precociousness, a musical career was not anticipated at that time. In 1850, he was enrolled in the preparatory class of the School of Jurisprudence when his family moved to St. Petersburg. He was admitted to the School of Jurisprudence in 1852, and while he was still a student there, he composed a canzonetta that became his first published work. His First Symphony , begun in 1866, proved to be a difficult and laborious exercise for Tchaikovsky, who found the structural demands of the symphonic sonata form incompatible with his own style. It was not performed until 1869, but it was well received. His began first opera, Voyevoda Fatum Romeo and Juliet Vakula the Smith , first staged in 1876, by which time his infatuation with nationalism in music had declined.

Tchaikovsky was one of the earlier students of the St. Petersburg Conservatory established by Anton Rubinstein , completing his studies there to become a member of the teaching staff at the similar institution established in Moscow by Anton Rubinstein 's brother Nikolay. He was able to withdraw from teaching when a rich widow, Nadezhda von Meck, offered him financial support which continued for much of his life, although, according to the original conditions of the pension, they never met. His music is thoroughly Russian in character, but, although he was influenced by Balakirev and the ideals of the Five Russian nationalist composers (with Cui Borodine Rimski-Korsakov and Moussorgski ), he may be seen as belonging rather to the more international school of composition fostered by the Conservatories that Balakirev so much deplored. Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky Works
Two above all of Tchaikovsky's operas have retained a place in international repertoire. Eugene Onegin, based on a work by Pushkin, was written in 1877, the year of the composer's disastrous and brief attempt at marriage.
