Born in Perth, Western Australia, on October 8, 1954, he learnt the cornet and the piano as a child, and after achieving his first commission ( 2 Short Circuits , for the West Australian Ballet Company) in 1971, studied music composition at the University of Western Australia. After graduating he moved to Sydney in 1975 and worked with the Sydney Dance Company as a pianist. In 1977 he was invited by the company to contribute a score for the project Tip (1977), and became the resident composer in 1978. His first major break occurred later that year when he wrote the music for Poppy , a dance piece about the life of Jean Cocteau . As the first full-length dance work to be choreographed, designed, and composed wholly by Australians, it attracted much attention, and Vineâs score, which skilfully evoked the music of Cocteauâs era while also employing | |
