Encyclopedia Article Find in this article View printer-friendly page E-mail Weir, Judith (1954- ), Scottish composer, noted for her original music-theatre compositions. She received lessons from John Tavener and played in the National Youth Orchestra whilst at school and then studied with Robin Holloway at King's College, Cambridge. Among appointments she has held are Southern Arts Association's Composer-in-Residence (1976-1979), Creative Arts Fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge (1983-1985) and Guinness Composer-in-Residence at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music (1988-1991). In 1995 Weir took up the position of Fairbairn Composer in Association with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), and she was honoured with a CBE the same year. She left the CBSO in 1998; from 1998 to 2000 she was artistic director of London's Spitalfields Festival. Her earliest compositions—represented by Out of the Air (1976) and King Harald's Saga (1979)—are strikingly individual and mark the clarity of sound and theatrical perception that are the hallmarks of her later works. Her affinity for marginal or alternative musical sources, particularly nonmainstream art and
