From the Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can change
Jump to: navigation search Artificial intelligence (AI) is the study of mental faculties through the use of computational models .The name was coined as the topic of a 1956 Dartmouth Conference by John McCarthy It is about making computers' decision making and train of thought appear more human. McCarthy defines it as "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines." The idea behind AI is not to make a computer smart by knowing more information. It is to build a machine that can act as if it were smart. Very often, AI is closely connected to mathematical logic , about proving things, and simplifying mathematical formulae First there was the Turing machine . Given a set of input data, it produces some output, after doing some calculations. That machine is the basis of modern computers. If someone wanted to appear very smart, all they needed to do was to imitate someone else who they know is smart. Then you would not be able to say if they were smart or if they were not. But in fact, all they do is mimic what they see. Such a machine is called Interaction machine and it is a lot more complex than a Turing machine.

The possibility of developing some such artifact has intrigued human beings since ancient times. With the growth of modern science, the search for AI has taken two major directions: psychological and physiological research into the nature of human thought, and the technological development of increasingly sophisticated computing systems. In medicine, programs have been developed that analyze the disease symptoms, medical history, and laboratory test results of a patient, and then suggest a diagnosis to the physician. The diagnostic program is an example of so-called expert systems—programs designed to perform tasks in specialized areas as a human would. Expert systems take computers a step beyond straightforward programming, being based on a technique called rule-based inference, in which preestablished rule systems are used to process the data. Despite their sophistication, systems still do not approach the complexity of true intelligent thought.

Artificial Intelligence Data Think Tank robot Landru Artificial intelligence (or computer intelligence ) is a term coined by 20th century Human computer engineers to describe hardware and software sophisticated enough to reason independently, form new conclusions, and alter its own responses. At the time the term was coined, such programs were largely theoretical. The yardstick for determining whether a computer was operating an artificial intelligence was then the Turing test , first devised by early computer scientist Alan Turing in citation needed edit The android Data , built in the early 24th century , may be an example of a true artificial intelligence according to this definition. So might certain other androids, notably, Ruk , an artifact of the Old Ones of Exo III . Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the science of making machines intelligent, in order to interpret or react to human intelligence or environmental stimulus. Arguments continue as to whether machine intelligence is possible and as to whether the emergence of machine intelligence would resemble human intelligence.
      Edit section Turing Test
An accepted method of testing AI is the Turing Test proposed by Alan Turing as "The Imitation Game"(1950). Used as a test for "intelligence" the Turing test requires a subject (person), an interogator (person) and an "intelligent machine". The object of the game is for the interrogator to use emperical questions to determine which of the other two is the person and which is the machine.

While no consensual definition of Artificial Intelligence (AI) exists, AI is broadly characterized as the study of computations that allow for perception, reason and action. We can divide the cognitive world into 3 domains - Intelligent, Normal and Below Normal. The average human being does Normal things. Intelligence is always demonstrated in NEW domains. The properties of a New domain are that the patterns in these domains are ambiguous and are incomplete. Therefore, Intelligence can be better understood as the ability to work efficiently with Incomplete, Ambiguous Patterns. Artificial Intelligence extends the computing power from an algorithmic domain to this Incomplete, Ambiguous patterns domain. (Algorithms have the property of Definiteness which cannot be satisfied in this domain.)
