The Common Gateway Interface
The Common Gateway Interface, or CGI, is a standard for external gateway programs to interface with information servers such as HTTP servers. The current version is CGI/1.1.
CGI Documentation
If you have no idea what CGI is, you should read this introduction Once you have a basic idea of what CGI is and what you can use it for, you should read this primer which will help you get started writing your own gateways. If you are interested in handling the output of HTML forms with your CGI program, you will want to read this guide to handling forms with CGI programs Security is a crucial issue when writing CGI programs. Please read these tips on how to write CGI programs which do not allow malicious users to abuse them. When you get more advanced, you should read the interface specification which will help you utilize CGI to the fullest extent. If you are a server software author, it will help you add CGI compliance to your information server. There is now also a tutorial for writing ErrorDocument handling CGI scripts.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search The Common Gateway Interface CGI ) is a standard protocol for interfacing external application software with an information server , commonly a web server The task of such an information server is to respond to requests (in the case of web servers, requests from client web browsers ) by returning output. Each time a request is received, the server analyzes what the request asks for, and returns the appropriate output. The two simplest ways, for the server, of doing this are the following:
  • if the request identifies a file stored on disk, return the contents of that file; if the request identifies an executable command and possibly arguments, run the command and return its output
CGI defines a standard way of doing the second. It defines how information about the server and the request is passed to the command in the form of arguments and environment variables , and how the command can pass back extra information about the output (such as the type ) in the form of headers

      ScriptAlias

The CGI (Common Gateway Interface) defines a way for a web server to interact with external content-generating programs, which are often referred to as CGI programs or CGI scripts. It is the simplest, and most common, way to put dynamic content on your web site. This document will be an introduction to setting up CGI on your Apache web server, and getting started writing CGI programs.
      Configuring Apache to permit CGI
In order to get your CGI programs to work properly, you'll need to have Apache configured to permit CGI execution. There are several ways to do this.
      ScriptAlias
The ScriptAlias directive tells Apache that a particular directory is set aside for CGI programs. Apache will assume that every file in this directory is a CGI program, and will attempt to execute it, when that particular resource is requested by a client.

    CGI Scripts
The cgi module is at the core of Python CGI scripts. The simplest CGI script that can be considered interesting involves printing out an HTTP header ("Content-type: text/html") and a Web page. In addition, you might want to handle any incoming inputs from things like HTML forms or request parameters. In the earliest days of CGI, shell scripts were sometimes used to do things like this, so the principles are not particularly advanced.
    Configuration
It can be an annoying experience getting the permissions just right on a script so that Web servers like Apache will run it, but the following checklist may be of some use:
  • Find out which user runs the Web server - it's not often the same one as your own user, and it may be one with very limited permissions. Check the server configuration to see if it lets you run scripts in a particular directory. Make sure that if you're using a configuration file for a particular directory, the global configuration permits you to define CGI script directories in that directory-local configuration file - some sites stop their users from altering such settings in such a way. Check the permissions from the top of the filesystem down to the directory where the script resides. The Web server user must be able to read and open/execute all the directories from the top right down to the script.

The cgi-lib.pl library has become the de facto standard library for creating Common Gateway Interface (CGI) scripts in the Perl language. Welcome to the official Web site for cgi-lib.pl , with the most up-to-date releases of the library. The cgi-lib.pl library makes CGI scripting in Perl easy enough for anyone to process forms and create dynamic Web content. The library has the following features:
    • Extremely simple to learn and easy to use
    • Designed for operation under Perl5 and Perl4
    • Very efficient
    • Compatibility with all CGI interactions, including File Upload
    • Convenient utility functions
    • Compatible with Perl5 security features such as taint, warnings, (command line options -Tw) and use strict;
    • Debugging facilities
    • Good starting point for migration to more sophisticated libraries
    Current versions of cgi-lib available:
    • Version 2.18 is the latest released version of cgi-lib.pl. New features in version 2 include support for file upload, improved robustness, and aids for debugging. As of version 2.15, there are work-arounds for bugs in Microsoft Internet Explorer File Upload.

    http://trac.edgewall.org/wiki/TracCgi
    Edgewall Software Search:
    Context Navigation
    Installing Trac as CGI
To install Trac as a CGI script, you need to make the trac.cgi executable as a CGI by your web server. Please note that using Trac via CGI is significantly slower than any other deployment method, such as or FastCGI If you're using Apache HTTPD , there are a couple ways to do that:
  • Use a ScriptAlias to map a URL to the trac.cgi script Copy the trac.cgi file into the directory for CGI executables used by your web server (commonly named cgi-bin ). You can also create a symbolic link, but in that case make sure that the FollowSymLinks option is enabled for the cgi-bin directory.
  • The first option is recommended as it also allows you to map the CGI to a friendly URL. Now, edit the Apache configuration file and add this snippet, file names and locations changed to match your installation: ScriptAlias /trac /usr/share/trac/cgi-bin/trac.cgi Note that this directive requires the module to be installed and enabled.
