Ontology (information science)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Ontology (computer science) Jump to: navigation search This article is about ontology in information science and computer science. For the term in philosophy, see ontology In both computer science and information science , an ontology is a representation of a set of concepts within a domain and the relationships between those concepts. It is used to reason about the properties of that domain, and may be used to define the domain. Ontologies are used in artificial intelligence , the Semantic Web software engineering biomedical informatics library science , and information architecture as a form of knowledge representation about the world or some part of it. Common components of ontologies include:
  • Individuals: instances or objects (the basic or "ground level" objects) Classes sets , collections, concepts or types of objects Attributes : properties, features, characteristics, or parameters that objects (and classes) can have Relations : ways that classes and objects can be related to one another Function terms: complex structures formed from certain relations that can be used in place of an individual term in a statement Restrictions: formally stated descriptions of what must be true in order for some assertion to be accepted as input Rules: statements in the form of an if-then (antecedent-consequent) sentence that describe the logical inferences that can be drawn from an assertion in a particular form Axia : assertions (including rules) in a logical form that together comprise the overall theory that the ontology describes, for its domain of application

The School of Computer Science is heavily integrated with the School of Mathematics
Computer science , or computing science, is the study of the theoretical foundations of information and computation and their implementation and application in computer systems. Computer science has many sub-fields; some emphasize the computation of specific results (such as computer graphics), while others (such as computational complexity theory) relate to properties of computational problems. Still others focus on the challenges in implementing computations. For example, programming language theory studies approaches to describing computations, while computer programming applies specific programming languages to solve specific computational problems. Note : more than one Wikiversity school can 'contain' departments that are 'contained' by "Topic:Computer Science"; schools should cooperate to develop the departments that they have in common. No turf wars should be fought over "ownership" of departments. See:

The Science of Color In grade school we learn that there are three primary colors - red, yellow and blue - that when combined produce secondary colors such as green, purple and orange, and all the various shades and variations on the primary and secondary colors. However, these are the primary colors of pigment and different systems apply to the colors that we see on computer screens and the colors that we see in printed media and photographs. Colors would not be possible without light because color is, in essence, light either reflected off of objects we see or viewed directly from the light source. When light is passed through a prism, the light beam changes direction, and the wavelengths are separated, causing the prism to produce the colors of the electromagnetic spectrum. Rainbows are light refracted through water particles in the air. Humans can only perceive a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum - from 4.3-7.5 x 10 Hz in frequency - and it is the wavelength of the radiation that determines the color of light that we are seeing. Each color has its own wavelength. Infrared, microwave, radio, television and electrical power have lower frequencies than visible light, and ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays have higher frequencies.

In Perils of a poor Computer Science Education — Part I , I said that I basically agree with Joel Spolsky in his post, The Perils of Java Schools way Merely great C#, Java, PHP, etc. developers run the gamut from important role-players, team members, to team leaders, etc. I think the most important thing you can learn as a developer is to be flexible. Think outside of the constraints of the languages and tools that you use. If it helps you to learn a different language to enable this, do so. If it helps to go deeper into the runtime environment (e.g., deeper into the CLR or the Java runtime or the compiler / assembler, etc), do so. Flexibility that is the practical lesson of the Computer Science program. Tags: c# Java JavaSchools Comments (1) ...

Joel Spolsky recently wrote about what he calls The Perils of Java Schools Some people have bridled at the article because they see it as slamming Java. Others suggest that he should update his interviewing style because he says it is harder to evaluate people. These comments miss the point of his article. I agree with him fundamentally that learning with a high-level language is just not enough. Kang Su Gatlin has a post about this as well:
