ttWriteMboxDiv('searchEnterpriseLinux_Definition_Body'); ttWriteMboxContent('searchEnterpriseLinux_Definition_Body'); - Linux (often pronounced LIH-nuhks with a short "i") is a Unix -like operating system that was designed to provide personal computer users a free or very low-cost operating system comparable to traditional and usually more expensive Unix systems. Linux has a reputation as a very efficient and fast-performing system. Linux's kernel (the central part of the operating system) was developed by Linus Torvalds at the University of Helsinki in Finland. To complete the operating system, Torvalds and other team members made use of system components developed by members of the Free Software Foundation for the GNU Project.

The GNU Operating System
Linux and the GNU Project
by Richard Stallman For more information see also the GNU/Linux FAQ , and Why GNU/Linux? Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project free software added up to a complete system because the GNU Project had been working since 1984 to make one. In the The GNU Manifesto we set forth the goal of developing a free Unix-like system, called GNU. The Initial Announcement of the GNU Project also outlines some of the original plans for the GNU system. By the time Linux was started, GNU was almost finished. Most free software projects have the goal of developing a particular program for a particular job. For example, Linus Torvalds set out to write a Unix-like kernel (Linux); Donald Knuth set out to write a text formatter (TeX); Bob Scheifler set out to develop a window system (the X Window System). It's natural to measure the contribution of this kind of project by specific programs that came from the project. GNU software But that is not the deepest way to consider the question. The GNU Project was not, is not, a project to develop specific software packages. It was not a project

45. DSL Information
Comprehensive information on DSL, wiki, forums, howtos, documentation.
http://damnsmalllinux.org/
What is DSL?
Damn Small Linux is a very versatile 50MB mini desktop oriented Linux distribution.
Damn Small is small enough and smart enough to do the following things:
  • Boot from a business card CD as a live linux distribution (LiveCD) Boot from a USB pen drive Boot from within a host operating system (that's right, it can run *inside* Windows) Run very nicely from an IDE Compact Flash drive via a method we call "frugal install" Transform into a Debian OS with a traditional hard drive install Run light enough to power a 486DX with 16MB of Ram Run fully in RAM with as little as 128MB (you will be amazed at how fast your computer can be!) Modularly grow DSL is highly extendable without the need to customize
DSL was originally developed as an experiment to see how many usable desktop applications can fit inside a 50MB live CD. It was at first just a personal tool/toy. But over time Damn Small Linux grew into a community project with hundreds of development hours put into refinements including a fully automated remote and local application installation system and a very versatile backup and restore system which may be used with any writable media including a hard drive, a floppy drive, or a USB device. DSL has a nearly complete desktop, and many command line tools. All applications are chosen with the best balance of functionality, size and speed. Damn Small also has the ability to act as an SSH/FTP/HTTPD server right off of a live CD. In our quest to save space and have a fully functional desktop we've made many GUI administration tools which are fast yet still easy to use. What does DSL have?

The grep Command - A Regular Expression Search And Extraction Tool
The Linux command grep allows you to search for a pattern in a list of files. Such patterns are specified as "regular expressions", which in their simplest form are "strings", such as words or sentence fragments. This command is useful for example when you want to find files that contain a particular pattern, or if you want to extract all the lines from a table that match a specified regular expression. Linux Remains Undefeated in Hacking Contest
During the CanSecWest conference organizers set up a contest to test the security of Windows Vista, Mac OS X Leopard, and Ubuntu Linux. Over a period of three days, the restrictions were gradually relaxed, so that the hackers were allowed to use flaws of an increasing scope of third party software. The computers running Mac OS X and Windows Vista were both cracked on the second day. The Linux system remained uncompromised till the end. Read more...
