The mid-2007 revision of the iMac is Apple's newest iMac. Macintosh , or for newer models, Mac , is a brand name which covers several lines of personal computers designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. The original Macintosh was released on January 24 ; it was the first commercially successful personal computer to feature a mouse and a graphical user interface (GUI) rather than a command line interface The idea for a personal computer appropriate for the ordinary consumer dates to the late 1970s and an Apple development team was established in 1979. After the success of the original Macintosh in 1984, the company quickly established market share only to see it dissipate in the 1990s as Microsoft came to monopolize personal computing. Apple consolidated multiple, consumer-level desktop models into the 1998 iMac all-in-one, which sold extremely well and saw the brand name revitalized. Current Mac systems are mainly targeted at the home, education, and creative professional markets. They are: the aforementioned (though upgraded) iMac and the entry-level

Preview incoming Apple Mail with Mail.appetizer Posted Mar 27th 2008 4:00PM by Simon Kerbel
Filed under: Macintosh E-mail Freeware Beta ... Mail.appetizer is a handy little plugin that enables you to preview incoming Apple Mail right on your Mac desktop. The Mail.appetizer window shows you the subject, sender, and a brief snippet of the message.
Once the plugin is installed (and Mail is restarted), you'll have a new Notifications option in your Mail preferences, with options to change:
  • Which mailboxes show the notifications The font and size of the notification text Transparency Time to display the message
Mail.appetizer is in beta, and the plugin has a few known issues . But if you've been looking for a simple tool to preview your Mail messages on your desktop a la Entourage style, then we would give Mail.appetizer a shot.
There are currently builds for both Tiger and Leopard.

Getting and Installing GIMP
There are various ways to obtain and install GIMP for your Macintosh. In addition to the source code distribution here on www.gimp.org, there are various alternative sources for packaged and even commercially distributed CDs, which aim to make installation and setup an easier task. These include:
  • Wilber loves Apple is a community that provides GIMP packages and help for Mac OS X users. MacPorts provide an easy way to install various open-source software products on Mac OS X. They have GIMP 2.4 in the latest revisions. The MacGIMP project provides GIMP for Mac OS X in a packaged CD format. But they don't offer GIMP 2.4 yet.
Requirements
GIMP will only run on Mac OS X, not on version 9 or earlier of the Macintosh operating system. There are a number of reasons why it is unlikely that GIMP will ever run on older versions of Mac OS. In addition to Mac OS X, the following is a list of what you will need to run GIMP on your Macintosh:
  • X Windowing Layer
GIMP uses a separate windowing layer, the X11 windowing protocol, on Mac OS X, which must be installed first. The

The Macintosh computer was released in January of 1984, with 128K RAM of memory. It quickly became obvious that this was insufficient, so eight months later Apple released an updated version, un-officially referred to as the 'Fat Mac'. It has 512K RAM, four times as much.
Except for the very expensive and unpopular Apple Lisa which came out in 1983, the Macintosh is considered to be the first commercially successful computer to use a GUI (Graphical User Interface), as seen above.
Before the Macintosh, all computers were 'text-based' - you operated them by typing words onto the keyboard. The Macintosh is run by activating pictures (icons) on the screen with a small hand-operated device called a "mouse". Most modern-day computers now operate on this principle, including modern Apple computers and most others which run the Microsoft Windows operating system.
The Macintosh has no room for internal expansion options - no other cards or devices can be installed, nor can the graphics capabilities be upgraded. Actually, it takes special tools just to get the case open.

If you are a relative novice and just looking for something easy and simple (not to mention free), this will do just fine. This client is "light weight" in the sense that it contains only the basic IRC features and none of the many frills you'll find in full GUI clients like Snak and Ircle. This is in part due to the relatively new history (really only active since 2004 or so), and in part also intentionally to keep things simple and easy for newbies. They'll gladly take donations, but otherwise just use it for free. :) [Thanks to JustDave at Mozilla.org for the tip.] Snak 5.2.x home page screen cap This client is what I personally recommend to users who may be coming from a Windows/mIRC background (welcome!) or who want a more serious IRC client with all the latest bells and whistles, full support, etc. Snak is the most rich in features and has been actively developed since the 1990s, with dozens of updates over the past few years while the traditional gold standard Ircle has essentially stood still. Snak appeals to people who prefer a streamlined interface without sacrificing all the "cool" features. Everything for each channel is contained in one window, docking windows will in fact allow multiple channels to share a window to maximize your precious screen space. The channel list feature is particularly fast and easy to use (unlike Ircle). Very easy to set up and configure. Supports both the scripting language from the classic

Making the Macintosh: Technology and Culture in Silicon Valley
Welcome
"Making the Macintosh" is an online project documenting the history of the Macintosh computer. The Macintosh stands at a cusp in the history of computing and Silicon Valley: it brought together (and sometimes transformed) a number of technical and conceptual threads in computing that developed in the 1960s and 1970s, but it also was responsible for sparking new movements in computing. This project collects and publishes primary material on the Macintosh's development and early reception. It draws on the extensive holdings of the Stanford University Library's Department of Special Collections, the personal papers of engineers and technical writers involved in the Macintosh project, and interviews conducted for the project. Read an interview with Susan Kare , icon designer on the Macintosh.

MSP is back for the most part. There may be periods of brief down time as the new server is tweaked a bit for other processes running on it. There will likely be another downtime of a few days when the server is eventually relocated back to the west coast.

As you've probably already noticed our main channel bot MacServPro (MSP) has been gone for the past several weeks because the server it runs on suffered a hardware failure. The good news is the drives and data are fine and replacement parts have arrived to build a new server. However our resident evil genius and botmaster Ambs has been incredibly busy and hasn't had time to work on it much. Hopefully things will be back to normal in a week or so so please be patient!

Hopefully thanks to the new content management system he designed into the the site will make keeping it updated will become a lot easier. Maybe now we can update it more than every five years. Maybe. A few sections are still being tweaked so you may see some changes over the next week or two. If you have any comments or suggestions for any of the sections let us know and maybe we can incorporate them into the site.
